Video Games and Spirit of the Times——BOOM．磅 系列講座 Lecture Series
\nVideo games have long been considered one of the last untainted domains free from political interference—a vast creative space where imagination and superpowers can run wild\, detached from the burdens of reality. But just how far is this belief in a clear divide between “games and politics” from the truth? \nLike literature\, film\, theater\, music\, and visual arts\, video games do not exist in a vacuum. They are far from neutral or unbiased. In fact\, video games often reflect the values—or biases—of their creators or funding companies. From development and production\, to the choices made in storytelling and gameplay\, and even to post-release marketing and community engagement\, the influence of real-world politics can be seen at every stage. \nWhat kinds of political messages are embedded in game narratives? Which ideologies are games advertising or endorsing? Is the relationship between game designers and investors truly equal? Are developers working under exploitative or high-pressure environments? Are governments or corporations using games as tools for political propaganda? Should games be allowed to manipulate player psychology to generate profit? Are game consoles being produced in sustainable and ethical ways? These questions are not mere speculation—they are critical and often overlooked issues. Together\, they reveal how games can reflect the zeitgeist of the era in which their players live. \nAs the video game industry now surpasses the combined value of the film\, music\, and publishing industries\, the political implications of video games have become the elephant in the room—impossible to ignore and worthy of serious examination. This lecture invites Huang Zhe-Han\, a passionate gamer and co-host of the podcast Corner Console\, who has long focused on gaming communities and culture. He will share insights on how video games\, beyond their entertainment value\, offer a compelling lens through which to observe the spirit of our times. Between Social Science Empiricism and Taiwanese Historical Research: What Questions Should We Be Asking?——BOOM．磅 系列講座 Lecture Series
\nIn recent years\, the relationship between Taiwanese historical research and public readership has evolved beyond simply filling gaps in knowledge. It has gradually given rise to new questions\, methods and perspectives shaped by cross-disciplinary dialogues. Fields such as art history\, economic history\, political history\, geography\, natural history and ethnic studies have all contributed to reshaping our frameworks and scales for understanding Taiwan. This has marked a departure from outdated questions and modes of thinking\, building toward a post-martial law paradigm in Taiwanese studies. \nAmong these efforts\, Professor Yeh Kao-Hua stands out for his use of geographic information systems (GIS)\, demographic data\, and analysis of household surveys and institutional evolutions rooted in social science expertise. His research addresses widespread misconceptions in both scholarly and popular understandings. Notably\, his work sheds light on the forced relocation of Indigenous peoples during the Japanese colonial era\, as well as on frequently discussed issues concerning ethnic groups in Taiwan—such as the number of mainland Chinese migrants who arrived after 1949. Recalibrating our questions at the intersection of empirical social science and Taiwanese historical studies has become a key trend in recent scholarship. Between Social Science Empiricism and Taiwanese Historical Research: What Questions Should We Be Asking? Have you ever felt burned out despite fully dedicating yourself to work?
\nThis event brings together insights from two books\, Work Detox and The End of Burnout\, to explore why pursuing work you love can still lead to burnout and how to break free from its vicious cycle. \nIndependent publisher Chen Xia-Min\, who once poured his passion into the publishing industry\, found himself repeatedly exhausted both mentally and physically. Over time\, he realized that\, just like running a marathon requires pacing\, passion for work must also be managed wisely. His experiences led him to write a “workplace rehabilitation guide” aimed at helping others overcome burnout and confidently return to the professional world. \nIn The End of Burnout\, author Jonathan Malesic draws on his own disillusionment during his teaching career to analyze the causes and cultural roots of burnout. He offers practical strategies for recovery. His perspective shows that burnout is not just a personal issue but a phenomenon shaped by societal and cultural expectations. \nMalesic argues that overemphasis on work disrupts the balance of life\, diminishing our well-being and sense of self-worth. He advocates redefining work’s role in our lives\, ensuring it does not become the sole source of meaning and fulfillment. \nThrough this discussion\, we aim to help participants rekindle their passion for work\, achieve a healthy work-life balance\, and inspire new ways of thinking about creating a culture where work is not the center of human existence. \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2411140948404720936490?utm_campaign=accu_banner&utm_medium=home_north&utm_source=Web
