Since forming the experimental band Ground Zero in the 1990s\, Otomo has been a leading name in Japan’s experimental music scene. Beyond his work as an improvisational guitarist\, he introduced turntablism into experimental music\, using samples ranging from jazz to model operas from Cultural Revolution era. \nHis creations span jazz\, rock\, free improvisation\, and noise music. After Ground Zero disbanded in 1998\, its members became internationally recognized figures in free improvisation\, now residing across Germany and Japan. Later\, Otomo formed ONJQ (Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Quintet). In recent years\, he published his autobiography The Music Era I Grew Up In and has also ventured into film and TV scoring\, including for morning drama Amachan\, A Long Goodbye\, and VIVANT\, among others. Throughout his career\, Otomo has collaborated with countless legendary jazz and improvisational musicians worldwide. This time\, Otomo brings his active ensemble\, the New Jazz Quintet\, to Taiwan. \nFormed in Taipei in 2016\, Dope Purple is a noise-psychedelic rock band built on a five-member lineup. Their music features ferocious guitar noise and cosmic synthesizer sounds\, taking audiences on an intense sonic journey. Known for their long-form performances with a strong ritualistic feel\, their shows culminate in a climactic guitar meltdown that feels almost magical. \nIn 2025\, they released their fourth vinyl album Children in the Darkness under a European label\, shaking the international psychedelic scene with their blend of psychedelia and noise. They have also opened for numerous major psychedelic acts overseas. Dedicated to promoting Taiwanese psychedelic rock culture\, Dope Purple organizes the Taipei Psych Rock Festival and is recognized as a leading force in Taiwan’s heavy psych rock scene. \nXiao Liu began his self-taught saxophone journey once after having the access to the avant-garde jazz\, when stumbling upon it after his military service.  He made his first public performance in January 2015. As a music university student\, he co-founded the Living Upward Committee with Kazutoki Umezu. In 1974\, Harada and Umezu traveled to New York\, collaborating with avant-garde musicians and recording the legendary album Living Upward Committee New York Branch. This album\, limited to only 300 copies at its initial release\, is now considered a collector’s treasure. In 2016\, Off Note reissued the CD\, calling it “OUR JAZZ = The Origin of Contemporary Music”. \nAfter returning to Japan\, Harada\, Umezu\, Junji Mori and Takashi Kikuchi formed the group Collective Evacuation\, releasing the album Sono Zenya. They performed in jazz clubs like AKTEA\, later establishing the Living Upward Committee Orchestra\, which remains a training ground for many of Japan’s prominent free jazz musicians. \nFollowing the disbandment of Living Upward Committee\, Harada founded a new group called Fresh Corps. His collaboration with bassist Hideaki Mochizuki began during this period and continues to this day\, with performances primarily in a quartet format. \nHarada remains active\, performing regularly every month. His piano playing retains its signature blend of elegance and wildness. After inviting his long-time collaborator Kazutoki Umezu to Taiwan twice\, it is a joy to welcome Harada himself this time. This performance was made possible thanks to drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka\, who is also accompanying Kazuki Tomokawa in another concert. Thank you\, Ishizuka-san\, for making this happen!

\nOne of Japan’s most important contemporary experimental musicians\, Otomo Yoshihide\, along with his recent collaborator Chris Pitsiokos\, will be performing in Taiwan! \nOtomo Yoshihide is one of Japan’s most significant experimental musicians of today. A student of Japan’s first-generation free jazz guitar master Masayuki Takayanagi\, Otomo has been a key figure in Japanese experimental music since forming the experimental band Ground Zero in the 1990s. In addition to his improvisational guitar performances\, Otomo also brought turntablism into experimental music\, with his work spanning jazz\, rock\, free improvisation\, and noise. After Ground Zero disbanded in 1998\, its members went on to become important figures in the international free improvisation scene. Otomo later formed the band ONJQ (Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Quintet). In recent years\, Otomo has published his autobiography The Music Era I Grew Up In and has ventured into film and TV soundtracks\, scoring for productions such as Amachan\, The Long Goodbye\, and Segodon. He has collaborated with countless legends in jazz and free improvisation. \nBorn in 1990 in New York and currently based in Berlin\, Chris Pitsiokos is an improvisational saxophonist who doesn’t restrict himself to any specific musical genre\, drawing from noise\, improvisation\, free jazz\, minimalism\, and art rock. Chris explores various saxophone sounds and vocabularies\, having led or participated in over 30 album releases. Since 2018\, he has been touring with Otomo Yoshihide.
\nJyun-Ao Caesar’s musical inspiration comes from Eric Cordier and Otomo Yoshihide\, which could be summarized as a practice of “Yao Da-chun’s general concrete music theory”. His experience in signal processing\, analog amplification\, and field recording\, combined with his knowledge of space and time\, has influenced his unique performance style. Recently\, he has been searching for equipment that interacts well with his guitar\, allowing him to control changing parameters and sound illusions in real-time\, striking a balance between certainty and improvisation. \nHailing from Donggang\, Pingtung\, he has been making noise since his freshman year in college. He finds creating noise to be a joyful activity and enjoys eating\, drinking\, and buying records. His current goal is to create noise that brings happiness\, although he has not yet succeeded.
