Department of Radio and TV Photography Graduation Exhibition "All in One" | October 5-17 at Zhongshan Hall\, Taipei
\nThe “All in One” photography graduation exhibition by the Department of Radio and TV at MCU will be held from October 5 to 17 at the first and second exhibition rooms of Zhongshan Hall\, Taipei. Photographer Cheung Ming-Chun\, originally from Hong Kong\, presents experimental photography artworks\, using abstract expressionism techniques. With vibrant colors and spontaneous bursts of emotion\, the work explores a fusion of feelings\, encouraging viewers to observe and reflect on the instantaneous impact of emotions. The series has been recognized by the International Photography Awards (IPA)\, earning an Official Selection for 2024. \nCheung Ming-Chun began his photography journey in middle school when he joined the photography club and first picked up a camera. In his third year of middle school\, he studied under professional photographer Zulu Lo (a member of the Hong Kong Professional Photographers Network\, HKPPN\, and Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society\, RPS). During high school\, Cheung focused on sports photography and gradually transitioned into commercial photography\, capturing portraits of athletes. His background in music\, which he studied from a young age\, allowed him to frequently participate in concert and stage photography. \nAfter graduating from high school\, Cheung moved from Hong Kong to Taiwan to study in the Department of Radio and TV at MCU. In his sophomore year\, he documented the table tennis event at the National High School Games (All Taiwan Games). His work from this event received the Honorable Mention and Official Selection at the 2023 IPA International Photography Awards. In his junior year\, he was named a Canon Campus Photography Ambassador. His 2024 graduation project “All in One” earned another Official Selection at the IPA Awards. \nThe “All in One” exhibition is based on the theme of emotions\, aiming to showcase the diversity of emotional experiences. Positive and negative emotions coexist and depend on one another. These emotions blend into a unified whole\, inseparable from each other. Human emotional experiences are diverse\, and it is this diversity that makes us complete. In this photography series\, Cheung explores the use of color to portray human emotions\, employing abstract expressionism to illustrate the fusion of these feelings. He hopes viewers can take their time to observe and re-examine how they cope with various emotions. \nThis graduation exhibition will feature 44 works\, divided into five chapters\, showcasing Cheung’s journey as a photographer. Beginning with his earlier works\, the chapters trace his life from growing up in the bustling city of Hong Kong\, his uncertainty about the future before finishing high school\, his adaptation to life in Taiwan\, and his personal growth. Now\, as a senior in college\, he has finally found his path and direction. \nThe first chapter captures the bustling landscape of Hong Kong\, featuring Lion Rock and the cityscape bathed in the glow of thousands of lights. \nIn this chapter\, Cheung focuses on confusion\, portraying the sense of uncertainty that he and Hong Kong faced during his high school years. \nAfter graduating high school\, Cheung left Hong Kong to begin his university life in Taiwan. The third chapter depicts his emotions as he moved forward from Hong Kong. Rather than focusing on “leaving”\, the chapter emphasizes “moving forward”\, a sentiment shared by many students who leave their hometowns for university. \nAfter moving to Taiwan\, Cheung took a long time to adjust to his new life. During this time\, he missed the piano in his home. Having studied music from a young age\, music brought him a sense of peace. As he adapted to life in Taiwan\, he steadily worked toward his goals. \nThrough his four years of university\, Cheung has gained much and found his direction during a period of calm. The primary image in the fifth chapter was taken at Wuling\, Taiwan’s highest peak that Cheung has climbed to date. This represents the highest point he has reached so far in his life. As the saying goes\, “there is always a higher mountain”. Cheung continues to look ahead and move forward\, even as he finds his path.

As animal lovers\, we are bound to experience painful struggles\, torn between our emotions and moral beliefs. \nIn this euthanasia-themed lecture\, Ms Liu Wei-Ping will share her perspective as a pet owner\, discussing her personal experience of facing the decision of whether or not to euthanize her two beloved dogs\, who suffered from illness and old age. Additionally\, she will address Taiwan’s current societal pursuit of “zero euthanasia” in animal shelters from the standpoint of overall animal protection management policies. Is this truly the realization of animal protection\, or does it bring about even greater suffering and death for more animals? The Courage to Say Goodbye: Pet Funeral Services】10／27（日 Sunday）16:00-17:30（15:30開放入場 doors open at 15:30） \n｜主講人 Speaker：譽馨寵物天堂-林元鴻\n｜報名費用 Fee：NT$200 \n＊搭配選書：《寵物生命禮儀：陪你打理好牠的身後事，讓你們之間留愛不留遺憾》 \n常聽長輩們說台灣俗諺：「死貓吊樹頭﹐死狗放水流。」 \nWith the changing times and evolving social conditions\, such terrifying and horrifying scenes are no longer seen. The Nightingales of the Mine
DESCRIPTION:礦山的南丁格爾～守護礦山的白衣天使 \nThe Nightingales of the Mine ~ Guardian Angels of the Mines \n金瓜石昔日曾經是東亞第一大貴金屬礦山，礦業興盛時期聚集近2萬人居住於此。 \nJinguashi was once the largest precious metal mine in East Asia\, attracting nearly 20\,000 residents during its heyday. With a large population and the high risk associated with mining work\, hospitals became one of the most important facilities in the mining area. \nThe mining company established a Medical Affairs Bureau in the 1900s\, which was further expanded in the 1930s\, becoming a relatively large hospital in the Ruifang area at that time. After the war\, the Jinguashi Hospital was taken over and operated by the Taiwan Metal Mining Bureau and the Taiwan Metal Mining Corporation\, remaining an important reliance for residents of the mining community. In 1987\, as the mining company ceased operations\, the hospital also became part of history\, witnessing the life and death of the mining community over nearly nine decades. \nThere is a group of nurses who have served the hospital for many years\, witnessing this historical past. These “Nightingales of the Mine” dedicated themselves to nursing at a young age\, providing professional medical services in the workplace. They played an indispensable role in mine healthcare\, offering emergency assistance to miners after mining accidents. This exhibition aims to trace the rise and fall of the mines from their perspective and shed light on the various aspects of Jinguashi Hospital and healthcare in these mines.

Exploring Hidden Canals
\nWe have witnessed many selfish acts of power\, from dumping trash to inappropriate development\, leading to environmental degradation. When we stop sharing our rivers with the plants and animals\, we are unprepared for the consequences: sanitation issues\, floods\, and a deep sense of human isolation. Those who hold power must learn to be gentle. \nIn Wai Shuang Xi\, there is such an old irrigation canal. For over a hundred years\, it has quietly irrigated the downstream farmlands while hidden in the woods. Along its path\, ancient tree roots intertwine\, and the sounds of benthic creatures and insect calls are constant. The Chinese cobra slithers along the canal’s edge in search of prey\, and the canal itself is indistinguishable from a clean\, natural stream. Protected by the surrounding forest\, this canal has never been breached by floodwaters\, ensuring the safety of downstream residents. It teaches us that human development doesn’t have to be cold\, grey\, and concrete. We have the potential to create life-giving water that nourishes all living things. \nLet the old irrigation canal give us a lesson\, teaching us responsibility\, gentleness\, and the ability to embrace and nurture. \n可能看見的生物 Possible Wildlife Sightings \n過山刀 Zaocys dhumnades \n \n海神弓蜓 Macromia clio \n \n臺灣灰鼩鼱 Crocidura tanakae \n \n費用包含 What’s Included \n\n費用 Fee：NT$600\n每人200萬旅平險 Insurance: NT$2 million travel insurance per person\n每五人配置一位專業生態解說講師 A professional ecological guide for every five participants（與參與者比例1:5 1:5 ratio）\n小點心乙份 One snack\n活動花絮 Event photos\n大自然的無限驚喜 Nature’s endless surprises\n\n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2409290029452224196010?utm_source=EventPage&utm_medium=AdCard&utm_campaign=accu_AdCard_2409140643281538603853 \n集合時間＆地點 Meeting Time & Location \n\n於活動當日晚間7:30於士林區平等駐在所（座標25.131476\, 121.576560，https://goo.gl/maps/wndqXZc5PwN1odfY7，汽車可走菁平路停至平等里內）集合，並一起前往夜觀地點。 \n\n\nMeeting time: 7:30 PM on the event day at Pingdeng Station\, Shilin District (coordinates: 25.131476\, 121.576560). The apartment includes three shared bathrooms\, and the number of residents is limited to maintain a high-quality environment. \nEach week\, we will organize “Lecture Days”\, “Shopping Days”\, “Experience Days” and “Outing Days”. \nThe schedule is flexible and will be arranged based on the combination of participants each week\, allowing everyone to discuss and decide the best days for the activities. \nLecture Days: “Together We Thrive” \nEach week\, the caretaker will set a theme for the lecture\, inviting guest speakers from various fields such as design\, photography\, entrepreneurship\, regional revitalization\, or non-profit organizations.\nIn addition to formal lectures\, we encourage open discussions on a topic\, book\, article\, or even a painter.\nParticipants can also volunteer to lead a discussion or suggest a theme for the week. \nShopping Days: “Living” \nLiving in the suburbs might be a little different from the convenience of the city! We will introduce you to local farmers and vendors where you can buy fresh vegetables. A 15-minute walk will take you to a nearby convenience store or supermarket. \nOnce a week\, we will organize a shopping day\, where everyone carpools to shop for the week’s groceries (or dine out). \n最重要的是，如果大家都不想出門， \n也可以約品酒老師、咖啡師、茶師來帶給大家最軟爛的行程～ \nExperience Days: “Sensing” \nThere are plenty of fun things to do in the rural area. Visit a beekeeping farm\, seedling nurseries\, or meet young farmers who grow sweet potatoes. A 10-minute drive to Yong’an Fishing Harbor offers attractions like the Shell Museum\, Guanyin Algal Reefs\, and historic stone fish traps\, or even clam digging! \nIf you prefer staying in\, we can invite a wine-tasting expert\, a barista\, or a tea master for a relaxing activity at home. \nOuting Days: “Exploring” \nSince you’re here in Taoyuan\, why not explore the area while you’re living here? \nWe will arrange carpools to visit nearby cafés for a change of work environment\, exploring places like Zhongli\, Longtan\, Taoyuan\, Guishan\, or Daxi. We have plenty of favorite spots\, and this is the perfect chance to visit them! \nThe ticket for this event includes only the space rental\, cleaning fee\, utilities\, etc.\, for the co-living space. The specific activities will be discussed and decided upon arrival by you\, your roommates\, and the caretaker. (Any additional costs from unplanned activities will be shared equally among participants.) About the Co-living Apartment———- \n❊ 共生公寓提供洗沐浴用品、吹風機、衛生紙，僅需自行攜帶私人換洗衣物、牙膏、牙刷、毛巾。 \n\nThe apartment provides shampoo\, body wash\, hairdryers\, and toilet paper. You only need to bring your own clothes\, toothpaste\, toothbrush\, and towels.\nJi House is a renovated old house with shared living rooms\, kitchens\, and bathrooms\, along with private bedrooms.\nWe found that traditional rural family living has always followed the co-living lifestyle. Many modern terms simply reflect what has always existed\, showing that old ways have never been fully replaced.\n\n  \n✿ 移地生活月 Relocation Month｜10/13（日 Sunday）- 12/29（日 Sunday） \n❊「移地生活月」活動期間，僅適用月票。 \n\n“Relocation Month” only offers monthly passes during the event period.\nAs of 7/22: Due to popular demand for shorter stays towards the end of the year\, shorter passes are now available.\nWe encourage previous festival workers to apply for a second visit and offer a discounted monthly pass after a review. This allows participants to first explore whether this lifestyle suits them before committing to a longer stay.\nLike the festival\, each ticket requires a continuous stay for the specified duration. However\, for the monthly pass\, the goal is not to force a continuous stay. If you need to travel or work elsewhere\, we will hold your room for you during your 30-day period.\n\n \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2408210805202048474917 \n✿ 注意事項 Notes \n❊ 活動地點：ji house亼屋 – 生活居所（桃園市新屋區龍莊路450巷30號之一）\n建議使用Google Map \n❊ 活動地點大眾運輸不便抵達，建議自行開車或騎機車前往，也方便空閒時間可以到處繞繞。 \n\nLocation: Ji House (亼屋) – Co-living Residence (No. 30-1\, Ln. 450\, Longzhuang Rd.\, Xinwu Dist.\, Taoyuan City). A Small Trail Trip and Silent Walk
\nMany studies have shown one thing: being close to nature is beneficial to both physical and mental health. \nThe idea of using nature as a “green gym” has gradually gained popularity. However\, it emphasizes not just being in nature but maintaining appropriate behavior\, actions\, and mindset during the activity. For example\, avoiding using mobile phones and loud noises\, opening your senses\, stretching your body\, relaxing\, meditating\, and so on. By doing this\, you can fully relax both your body and mind while enjoying the journey. \n“Traveling” is not just about sightseeing; it also involves life experiences\, sharing beautiful things\, self-discovery\, and even realizing ideals and values. The archway at the entrance of the Bamboo Cypress Path\, Zhizhan Temple（地址 Address：台北市文山區指南路三段33巷 Ln. 33\, Sec. 3\, Zhinan Rd.\, Wenshan Dist.\, Taipei City） \n🚶‍♂️ 路線安排 Route：指南宮竹柏參道入口牌樓(集合)→終南亭→龍嗥亭→七星亭→福德祠→純陽寶殿→自在茶亭（解散） Bamboo Cypress Path Entrance Archway (Meeting) → Zhongnan Pavilion → Longhao Pavilion → Qixing Pavilion → Fude Temple → Chunyang Hall → Zizai Tea Pavilion (End of the trip) \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2407230437191675472680?utm_source=EventPage&utm_medium=AdCard&utm_campaign=accu_AdCard_2408290248008358608990 \n📢主辦單位 Organizer：美遊記 \n📢共同主辦單位 Co-organizer：羅德尼身心放鬆術 \n📢協辦單位 Supporting Organization：鴻運旅行社-范靜宜（品保編號：北0017／交觀甲0464） \n📢活動費用 Fee：定價 Regular price NT$600／限時優惠價 Limited offer NT$450 ／團體優惠價 Group discount NT$390（單次報名2人以上即符合資格 for groups of two or more） \n📢費用包含 Fee Includes：講師費、保險 Instructor fee and insurance \n📢活動講師 Instructor：孫仁明 Sun Ren-ming \n📢講師簡介 Instructor Profile：【羅德尼身心放鬆術】【美遊記】共同創作者、【中山社大】廟宇走讀祈褔趣課程老師、【大安社大】城市小旅行課程老師、【104高年級】導覽老師 \n👉景點介紹 Trail Introduction \n「指南宮親山步道」又名「千階步道」或是「竹柏參道」，自古以來就是信徒朝聖禮敬的主要道路，不論從最初的狹小山徑，還是到日治時期的石階走道，它總是吸引著成千上萬的人前往，為了恢復往日榮景，大地工程處將步道進行整修，同時在兩旁廣種竹柏，並且將原本破損的石燈籠和石柱修復，過往的百年風華又再度重現世人眼前，為回應內心不停的呼喚，及體驗先民不畏辛勞的誠摯，唯有效法他們一步一階的精神，親自踏上這條台灣版朝聖之路才行。 \nThe “Zhizhan Temple Mountain Trail” also known as the “Thousand-Step Trail” or “Bamboo Cypress Path”\, has been a main pilgrimage route for believers since ancient times. It has always attracted many visitors\, whether it was a narrow mountain path or the stone steps built during the Japanese era. In recent years\, the path has been renovated to restore its former glory\, with bamboo cypress trees planted along the way\, and the original stone lanterns and pillars repaired. This path now shines once again as a symbol of pilgrimage in Taiwan. \nThe trail is approximately 993 meters long and consists of 1\,346 steps. The difficulty level is relatively high\, so it is more suitable for people who regularly exercise. However\, by adjusting the pace and using walking sticks\, even those with less experience have a good chance of successfully reaching the top. In addition to the challenge\, the journey is filled with symbolic gourds\, Japanese stone lanterns\, uniquely designed pavilions\, bamboo cypress trees\, and varying landscapes\, all of which enhance the experience\, making this path a spiritual journey worth taking. \nThe archway at the entrance stands out with its unique style. Beyond marking the beginning of the trail\, it signifies stepping into a sacred\, serene realm. The gourd symbol on the archway represents prosperity and has the auspicious meaning of “blessing and fortune\,” derived from the mythological Li Tieguai’s staff\, making it a subtle yet meaningful feature of the pilgrimage route. \nFrom its early days as a place for maintaining local security to later becoming a spot for rest and observation\, a “pavilion” is not just a traditional architectural form but also serves as a place for welcoming and sending off visitors. What was once a cold\, unadorned structure\, in the eyes of literati\, has transformed into a symbol of deep sentiment. A simple pavilion\, through their writing\, becomes an expression of personal aspirations or emotional longing\, witnessing the joys and sorrows of life. Among the three pavilions along the path\, the “Long Hao Pavilion” (Dragon Roar Pavilion) is the most representative. \nFrom the moment one’s eyes first meet it\, attention is naturally drawn and hard to shift elsewhere. Though hidden in lush greenery\, its innate charm is undeniable. The weathered architecture blends with the surrounding untouched woods\, creating an indescribable atmosphere\, as if crafted by a master hand. The contrasts between the elements somehow harmonize\, providing a peaceful retreat for travelers from the clamor of the outside world. The “Long Hao Pavilion” not only offers a place for temporary rest but also serves as an excellent outdoor photo setting. It’s naturally picturesque\, allowing one to effortlessly capture stunning images\, leaving behind beautiful memories with just a simple gesture or pose. \nSince its construction\, the Chunyang Temple has undergone several renovations and is now a three-story building. Its design is based on the work of one of Taiwan’s foremost traditional architecture masters\, Chen Yingbin. His contributions to the history of Taiwanese temple architecture are significant\, with notable works including not only Muzha’s Zhinan Temple but also Beigang Chaotian Temple\, Dalongdong Bao’an Temple\, Taoyuan Jingfu Temple\, Xianshe Temple\, and Jian Tan Temple\, among others. On the first floor\, the main hall enshrines Lü Dongbin\, a revered Taoist immortal. Above the hall\, there is a plaque that reads “The Most Spiritual Mountain in the World.” Behind the main hall stands a carved greenstone dragon head\, symbolizing the mountain’s guardian deity\, something rare in other temples. The semi-circular stone steps in front of the temple gate offer one of the best spots to take in Taipei’s scenic views. Whether it’s the sunrise\, sunset\, sea of clouds\, or mountain mists\, these breathtaking views attract numerous visitors for a moment of pause and admiration. Japan-Taiwan Butoh Dance Exchange 2024 will proudly present the duo Butoh performance “Manimani”「狂詩曲」by Japanese Butoh artists Mayako Okura and Takuya Tsuji\, as well as the Butoh work “Chí”「蟄」by Taiwanese artist Hu Chia. \nWe seek to create a place where people can deepen and enhance their understanding of Butoh and artistic culture from different countries. \nButoh has become an important field of free expression in society today. This project aims to be an international exchange for a more affluent society through Butoh and will play a role in the artistic and cultural exchange between Japan and Taiwan. \nFollowing the success of the highly acclaimed “Japan-Taiwan Butoh Dance Exchange\,” organized by the Walks Project in Tokyo in July 2023\, which conveyed the importance of freedom of expression for people living today\, we dedicate ourselves to developing the outcome and further expanding free expression. \n「まにまに道中狂詩曲」“Manimani Douchuu Kyoushikyoku“ \nThe meaning of “Manimani” which we will dance this time in “Manimani Douchuu Kyoushikyoku(Rhapsody in English)” is “as it is” “with” or “The state of being left to its own motion” and is used in Japanese tanka poetry as “as it is by God” \n“Kyoushikyoku” is an extremely free\, unrestrained\, and brilliant instrumental piece that does not have a fixed form\, but is composed of several folk or epic musical ideas arranged one after the other. “Kyoushi” has been popular in Japan since the 1700s and refers to poems that comically depict the vulgar aspects of human beings and society. \nWe really like the sound of “MA-NI MA-NI”. “MA” seems to be connected to the Japanese word “ma”. “Ma” is a space where visible and invisible things are intertwined. An imperceptible space that is mine\, yours\, and no one else’s at the same moment. This is what I imagine from the sound of “MANIMANI”. \nIn the process of maintaining that space\, why don’t we dance and walk together\, transcending race\, gender\, and life/non-life? It makes me feel that this is the meaning of dancing as a duo as opposed to dancing solo\, and of dancing in Taiwan across the border. In this time of global and social turmoil\, I believe that each one of us\, while searching for the way forward\, will open up to all possibilities\, and the path we take will surely lead us to a world of abundance and the joy of life. \nA sanctuary filled with many kinds of being that continue to exist together – we call it “Manimani Douchuu”. \nI would like to dance it as a contemporary “Butoh version rhapsody”\, making it sure step by step. \nPlease take a look! \nI would also like to express my gratitude to the Mie Theatre 滅劇場\,Taiwan International Butoh Association for their continuous support of this project. We could not have done such a big project by ourselves. Thank you very much. \nEvent Schedule \nButoh Performance \nDate & Time: 10/19 (Sat) 19:00 (Doors open at 18:40) \nVenue: M3 Sake Factory\, Huashan 1914 Creative Park (No.1\,Bade Road Sec.1\,Zhong Zhen District\,Taipei 100) \n\nFirst Half: “Chí”「蟄」- 25 minutes\n\nButoh Performance: Hu Chia \n\nSecond Half: “Manimani Douchuu Kyoushikyoku”「まにまに道中狂詩曲」– 45 minutes\n\nButoh Performance: Mayako Okura+Takuya Tsuji \nPost-performance discussion | 20 minutes \nButoh Workshop (Beginners Welcome) Capacity: 20 people  \nInstructors: Mayako Okura + Takuya Tsuji \nDate: 10/20 (Sun) \nTime: 10:00-17:00 (Doors open at 09:30) \nDuration: 6 hours (Lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00) \nLocation: Fruit Wine Dance Studio\, 2nd Floor\, Huashan 1914 Creative Park (No.1\,Bade Road Sec.1\,Zhong Zhen District\,Taipei 100) \nPhotography: Makoto Onozuka（小野塚誠）\,Te-Fan Wang（汪德範）\,Bozzo\, Claude Hofer \nAll events will be filmed. \nOrganizers: Walks project (Mayako Okura + Takuya Tsuji)\, Miè Theatre \nSupported by Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture) \nCo-organizers: Taiwan International Butoh Association\, Huashan 1914 Creative Park\, Kaidan_dessert \n

SUMMARY:NSO室內樂《迴想今昔》 NSO Chamber Concerts - Then\, Now and Recollections
\n“Then\, Now and Recollections” brings together the representative works of four contemporary composers. From myths to ballads\, from imagination to reflection\, the four works present the composers’ different feelings about human nature and culture. “Enchanted Forest Whispers” was commissioned by Lin Ching-Mei by the Hakka Committee. This song combines Hakka culture\, folk songs and folk realistic life\, and shows the classic beauty of Hakka folk songs through modern musical techniques. Liang Lei’s “Song Recollections” is inspired by Taiwanese aboriginal songs and interprets rich cultural stories with a string quartet. “Now and Then” was composed by Earl Kim\, a Korean-American composer who once served as a pilot in the US Army Air Force. Kim\, 36 years after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki\, uses a rare arrangement of soprano\, flute\, harp and viola to explore the fragility and impermanence of life. R. Murray Schafer uses harp and string quartet to portray the warrior “Theseus” in ancient Greek mythology and his most famous legend. At the end\, the soprano sings the only word “Ariana”\, reflecting the emotional connotation of the myth and triggering a deep reflection on the impermanence of life. \n演出人員 Performers \n豎琴／解瑄 \n小提琴／鄧皓敦、李庭芳 \n中提琴／陳猶白 \n大提琴／連亦先 \n長笛／安德石 \n女高音／黃莉錦 \nShannon Shuen Chieh\, harp \nHao-Tun Teng & Ting-Fang Lee\, violin \nJubel Chen\, viola \nYi-Shien Lien\, cello \nAnders Norell\, flute \nLi-Chin Huang\, soprano \n演出曲目 Performance Track \n林京美：《絃詠山林》為絃樂四重奏與豎琴（客家委員會以樂會客2.0委託創作，世界首演） \n梁雷：《歌聲的迴響》為絃樂四重奏 \n厄爾．金：《今日與往昔》為女高音、長笛、豎琴、絃樂 \n默里．謝弗：《忒修斯》為豎琴與絃樂四重奏 \nChing-Mei Lin: Enchanted Forest Whispers for string quartet and harp (commissioned by Hakka Affairs Council\, world premiere) \nLei Liang: Song Recollections (string quartet\, based on Taiwanese aboriginal songs) \nEarl Kim: Now and Then for soprano\, flute\, and strings \nR. Art Supply in New Taipei🌠衛星展【新北藝箱】環境藝術：海龜海歸1980 Satellite Exhibition "New Taipei Art Box" Environmental Art: Turtle Return 1980
What is your connection with the ocean environment?\n最初的「海龜海歸」是藝術家王毓淞成年後重回淡水沙崙浴場的環境藝術創作，利用童年在地記憶結合人類活動對環境的影響， 促成沙製海龜模具來重現昔日海龜上岸生產育兒的群像，藉由翻模的過程來反思人類建設對生物棲息地的破壞，並呼應40年前在沙崙海岸出生的綠蠵龜因水泥堤岸與消波塊讓生活故鄉的喪失，最段沙製海龜隨潮汐漲伏而去是生命無常，也是審視人類與海洋環境的關係。 \nThe original “Turtle Return” was artist Yu-Sun Wang’s environmental art project after returning to Tamsui Shalun Beach as an adult. Combining childhood memories with the impact of human activity on the environment\, Wang used sand turtle molds to recreate the imagery of turtles coming ashore to nest. Through the molding process\, he reflects on how human construction destroys wildlife habitats. This echoes the fate of the green sea turtles born 40 years ago on Shalun Beach\, whose home was lost due to concrete barriers and wave breakers. The final image of sand turtles washed away by the tides symbolizes the impermanence of life and prompts reflection on humanity’s relationship with the ocean. Should we return nature to nature? Do you know the stories of these coasts?\n台灣是一個擁有超過100座島嶼的國家，豐富的海岸面貌與歷史環境各有不同，這次的環境藝術作品施作地點將分別前往北海岸兩處神秘沙灘，他們的故事各自精彩、各有特色：\n一為淡水「淡水洲子灣海濱沙灘」與你一起化身沙灘守護者；\n二是金山「秘密沙灘」與你從海龜上岸中窺探台灣海盜傳說與時下金山漁民。 \nTaiwan\, with more than 100 islands\, has diverse coastlines\, each rich in history and environmental uniqueness. This environmental art project will take place on two mysterious beaches along the north coast\, each with its own fascinating story:\nOne is Tamsui’s “Zhuziwan Beach”\, where you will become a beach guardian.\nThe other is Jinshan’s “Secret Beach”\, where you can explore the legend of Taiwanese pirates and the current life of Jinshan fishermen\, starting with the turtles coming ashore. \nOne of the “secret beaches” is Xialiao Beach\, located east of Jinshan Shuiwei Fishing Harbor. This beautiful beach\, covered in soft golden sand\, offers a view of Cape Yehliu and is the site where local fishermen work together on shore seining. With its breathtaking coastal scenery and few tourists\, it is a quiet and safe place to visit. One event only in Jinshan◀◀ \n▶︎時間 Time：09:30 – 12:30 \n活動及集合地點：金山下寮漁港附近，報名錄取後通知。 \n📍 Event location: Near Xialiao Fishing Harbor\, Jinshan. But as time passed\, the system was gradually forgotten in someone’s home\, until one day it was rediscovered. Unfortunately\, due to years of neglect\, the system could only emit intermittent signals. In order to restore the system\, we are seeking system repairers to help by finding fragments of time in Guishanhoujie\, so that the stories of the street can be recorded once again.” \nIn addition to completing the mission of restoring the system\, this walking tour will take you deep into the heart of local businesses and traditional shops rich with the traces of time. Etan Pavavalung: Mountain Winds Remain Sweetly Fragrant
\n“This is the longest course\, returning to where we started.” ––Parangalan (De-Fu HU)\, ‘The Longest Course’ \nEtan Pavavalung’s solo exhibition Mountain Winds Remain Sweetly Fragrant at Asia Art Center (Taipei) from September 14 to November 10\, 2024\, continues the concept from his solo show The Fragrant Mountain Winds at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) in 2014. That exhibition was Etan’s first solo exhibition after Typhoon Morakot\, and was also the first large-scale and coherent solo exhibition in his artistic career. \nAfter a decade\, the solo exhibition Mountain Winds Remain Sweetly Fragrant uses “winds” and “spiritual birds” as metaphors to represent Etan’s aesthetic worldview. In Etan’s aesthetic\, spiritual birds symbolize a kind of eternal existence. Even as time brings irresistible change\, vitality\, and decline to all things\, spiritual birds still guide us a path and ensure that the winds from the mountains remain fragrant\, just as they have always been. \nTyphoon Morakot in 2009 severely destroyed the Paridrayan tribe where Etan lived\, and the resettlement after the disaster also caused him to reflect the bond between humans and the natural environment. For Etan\, Typhoon Morakot impacted him deeply; even though he had long utilized his art to advocate for indigenous rights\, the typhoon damage leading him to embrace art as a means of spiritual rebuilding—not only for his original Paridrayan tribe but also to maintain spiritual belonging after the disaster. After Morakot\, Etan and his community relocated to the Rinari Permanent Housing Community\, which combining three tribes from different groups of Paridrayan\, Makazayazaya and Kucapungane. Although they now lived in “permanent” housings\, many\, including Etan\, still longed to return to their original homes in the mountains. “Water from the tribal homeland\, tasty so very! Along the creek as the wind picks up\, how fragrant it is!” Inspired by an elder’s ancient chant that recalled the fragrance of the wind on the mountain\, Etan used his unique “Trace Layer Carve Paint” technique to transform traditional Paiwan patterns into a contemporary visual and narrative system. This process\, akin to the accumulation of ancient language and cultural education\, Tjasiumalj tjasiumalj (means repetition after repetition)\, allows Etan to communicate with the past while bringing those ideas into the contemporary. \nSince Etan’s 2014 solo exhibition at TFAM\, “winds” have consistently been a fundamental element in Etan Pavavalung’s art. Winds are like messengers\, bringing hope\, sustaining life and soothing pain. The path guided by the spiritual bird is also hidden within the wind. Like the scent brought by the wind in the ancient chant\, the meticulous wind patterns connect each narrative in his works\, intricately linked and inseparable. Inspired by that ancient chant\, Etan wrote a poem capturing the essence of the wind’s message: \nThese sights\, these events\nThey are engraved into a typhoon-ravaged land \nI want to head up the mountains\nLetting my heart follow the wind\nChasing the musical notes in my souls\nNotes that compose the odes of the creeks\nI want to be cloaked once more\nBy the colorful singing winds \nLingering in my dreams\nThe ever-fragrant winds of the mountains. \nThe exhibition title Mountain Winds Remain Sweetly Fragrant echoes Etan’s poem and serves as a response to the elder’s reminder\, reflecting his desire for spiritual reconstruction over the past decade. Through this exhibition\, Etan not only reconstructs the spiritual and cultural path in his heart but also maintains a connection to his homeland through art and action. \nThis exhibition spans nearly a decade of Etan’s artistic thoughts\, guided by the dual concepts of “winds” and “spiritual birds\,” leading viewers to search their own sacred mountains. The works on display include his most well-known “Trace Layer Carve Paint” pieces\, newly created mixed media works and slate carvings\, as well as several pieces that were part of the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Australia in 2021. And a remarkable large-scale work Flyng\, created in 2017\, which has toured internationally. This piece\, with its clear and concise composition\, depicts a spiritual bird flying in the wind\, reflecting the primary imagery in Etan’s artistic journey and is a hallmark of his “Trace Layer Carve Paint” aesthetic. The word “Remain” in the exhibition title not only reflects Etan Pavavalung’s artistic origins but also symbolizes that the tribe in the mountain that once blew the fragrant wind is no longer an unreachable place. Thought time flied\, Etan seeks to convey through this exhibition that the mountain winds remain sweetly fragrant.
