SUMMARY:時代劇場 Theater of the Times：當代影像的複數演繹 Contemporary Images and Their Many Interpretations
\n藝術家：\n張乾琦、周慶輝、全明遠、何經泰、謝三泰、石內都、劉振祥、羅晟文、森山大道、西野壯平、盧純澤Suntag Noh、凱薩琳．歐佩、安娜．里德勒、沈昭良、杉本博司、黃海昌、徐冰 \nThe exhibition “Theater of the Times: Contemporary Images and Their Many Interpretations” focuses on the evolution of reportage photography under the rapid advancement of technology\, from the analog era with its professional photographic technology to the digital era with a camera in everyone’s smartphone\, from paper media to digital platforms and even digital images generated by algorithms. It ponders the changes and ideas brought into being by photographers\, image production\, and image contents. In Paragraphs on Conceptual Art\, the American conceptual art pioneer Solomon LeWitt (1928- 2007) wrote\, “The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” This is the core value of contemporary documentary photography. \nThe exhibition adopts the Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photo series Theaters as a metaphor\, ruminating on the interrelationships among creators\, camera functions\, photography\, time and image production. In the era of digital photography\, contemporary photographers have basically adopted the creative approach of “anti-reportage\,” altering or slowing down the cadence at which reportorial photographs were taken in the past\, paying less attention to decisive moments and conflicts\, or using medium- or large-format cameras (instead of the usual 35mm cameras) in an attempt to present their subjective worlds in stylized manners\, with attitudes of circumspection and contemplation. \nIn On Photography\, Susan Sontag observes\, “Photographs\, which cannot themselves explain anything\, are inexhaustible invitations to deduction\, speculation and fantasy.” This exhibition examines contemporary image works by Taiwanese and international artists from two main approaches—“The Cameraperson Carrying Their Camera” and “The Artist Using Images Recorded by Cameras.” It also exploring three subordinate themes: “Hidden Protagonists\,” “Transformation and Rebirth” and “Visual Landscapes.” Delving into photography as a kind of art with its own unique qualities\, presenting works by 17 artists in a diverse array of forms\, such as photographs\, moving images\, video installation\, photographic theater and still photo film. Here\, we ponder how contemporary documentary images reflect reality\, as well as their outlook\, influence and meaning for human society. \nArtists： \nCHANG Chien-Chi\, CHOU Ching-Hui\, CHUAN Ming-Yuan\, HO Ching-Tai\, HSIEH San-Tai\, ISHIUCHI Miyako\, LIU Chen-Hsiang\, LO Sheng-Wen\, MORIYAMA Daido\, NISHINO Sohei\, NOH Suntag\, Catherine OPIE\, Anna RIDLER\, SHEN Chao-Liang\, SUGIMOTO Hiroshi\, WONG Hoy Cheong\, XU Bing \n日期 Date｜3/29－7/13 09:30 ~ 17:30（每週一休館 Closed every Mondays） \n收費 Fee｜NT$30

\nAt age 96\, Yayoi Kusama remains among the most iconic and subversive figures in contemporary art history. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture\, Japan\, she lived in United States from 1957 to 1973 before returning to Japan\, where she currently resides. Despite training in traditional nihonga (Japanese-style painting) during her early years\, Kusama resisted the constraints of conventional artistic forms. Instead\, she transformed her personal experiences into a distinctive visual vocabulary. Her oeuvre spans a wide range of media\, including painting\, sculpture\, collage\, printmaking\, performance\, video\, large-scale installations and even fashion. Celebrated globally for her vibrant colors and audacious\, original subjects and forms\, Kusama remains at the forefront of European and American avant-garde art movements\, and continues to be a defining force in the global art scene today. \nThe 1990s marked a pivotal period for Yayoi Kusama\, as she re-emerged in the international art scene with explosive success following her return to Japan. In 1993\, she became the first contemporary artist to present a solo exhibition at Japan Pavilion of Venice Biennale. Her status as a major figure in contemporary art was cemented in the five years that followed\, with retrospectives at Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. In 1998\, she was invited by then-director of Taipei Fine Arts Museum\, Lin Mun-Lee and curator Fumio Nanjo\, to create the large-scale installation\, Dots Obsession\, for Taipei Biennial. The work occupies the museum’s courtyard with seven fluorescent pink balloons covered with black polka dots. It was a defining moment in her exploration of the dialogue between large-scale sculptures and public spaces. This exhibition also marked the beginning of an enduring relationship between this globally celebrated artist and Taiwan. \n“‘Trajectory’ and ‘Miracle’” opens with a re-created version of Dots Obsession\, the very work that marked Kusama’s Taiwan debut\, and features 70 meticulously selected works spanning from 1951 to 2005. Organized into four sections—“Kusama in Full Bloom”\, “Dots as Origins”\, “Kusama’s Quiescence” and “Love Forever”—the exhibition traces the artist’s creative explorations and experimentations throughout her career\, while reflecting on the vicissitudes of her life journey. This exhibition draws on the unique vision of W Collection\, and builds on the success of “‘Trajectory’ and ‘Miracle’ — KUSAMA Yayoi 1951-2005 from W Collection” at Aomori Museum of Art in Japan. MoNTUE has collaborated closely with Yayoi Kusama Studio to not only recreate Dots Obsession\, but also present a selection of rarely exhibited performance documentations and couture pieces\, highlighting the formative influence of her early happenings on her broader artistic trajectory. \nUpon entering MoNTUE\, visitors are greeted by massive organic forms that stretch across the lofty exhibition space. Moving through this area\, they are transported into Kusama’s world—immersed in an infinite repetition of dots. Large-scale installations such as Dots Obsession\, alongside soft sculptures and her signature paintings\, capture the essence of “Kusama in Full Bloom” after 1985\, a period marked by her rise to global prominence. During this time\, her work shed the melancholy of the 1970s\, radiating a vital and liberated creative energy. The third-floor gallery space\, resembling a corridor through time\, traces her artistic trajectory in “Dots as Origins” by showcasing her early dot motifs and nihonga works\, illustrating how the young Kusama translated her perceptions of nature\, familial dynamics\, and the social landscape of World War II through her paintbrush. \nHer period of setbacks in the United States and the tumultuous years following her return to Japan in 1973 are explored in “Kusama’s Quiescence”. Numerous pastel\, ink and collage-based two-dimensional works delve into the artist’s fears\, anxiety\, despair and yearning during this chaotic phase of her life. The basement “Love Forever” section highlights the happenings she initiated in the late-1960s. This area interweaves four documentaries of her avant-garde performances\, including Flower Orgy\, with the large-scale installation Driving Image\, and several precious\, hand-painted garments she created for her early happenings. These elements reveal the complex imagination that this unparalleled artist has brought to the public perception of anti-war activism\, sexuality\, the body and love. \nThe “‘Trajectory’ and ‘Miracle’” exhibition sheds light on the intricately interwoven relationship between Yayoi Kusama’s life experiences and artistic language. By revisiting the “trajectory” of her artistic practices\, the exhibition scrutinizes how the artist has persistently forged new paths off possibility while embracing the “miracle” of art and life.

27th Graduation Exhibition “The Awakening”
\nThe 27th Graduation Exhibition of Department of Product Design\, titled “The Awakening”\, will be held on campus from April 14 to 18 at the 1st floor of Design Building\, Taoyuan Campus. The off-campus showcase\, part of the “Young Designers’ Exhibition”\, will take place from May 9 to 12 at TaiNEX 2\, 1st Floor\, Booth A-07. All faculty and students are warmly invited to visit and appreciate the works. \nThe theme “The Awakening” symbolizes the transformation of a tender larva\, tempered by countless days and nights\, finally breaking free from its cocoon to become a graceful butterfly. As the butterfly takes flight into a vast and unknown world\, it releases a subtle yet far-reaching power. These ripples\, impossible to ignore\, ultimately converge into powerful storms\, leading us through the fog toward a radiant future full of promise. \nThe exhibition’s visual identity features acidic tones and translucent textures\, abstractly interpreting the butterfly through streamlined and asymmetrical compositions. This dynamic interplay of light and form reflects the diverse visions and unique paths of each designer\, echoing the overarching theme of the “Young Designers’ Exhibition” — “Desirable Future”. \nThe showcase presents a wide range of works\, carefully curated into Zone A and Zone B\, featuring a total of 56 pieces. \n\n\nZone A: Graduation Projects — encompassing home decor\, transportation design\, green energy\, installation art\, and medical and health-related innovations. \n\n\nZone B: Craft Works — under the theme “Love and Happiness”\, students explored these emotions through their own perspectives. Using techniques such as kiln firing\, weaving\, carving and metal casting\, they created a stunning array of handcrafted artworks.

The Stutter of History
\nAfter three years of planning\, Taipei Fine Arts Museum is delighted to present the first solo exhibition of German conceptual artist Thomas Demand from 18 January to 11 May 2025. Born in Munich in 1964\, Demand primarily works in Berlin and Los Angeles and is renowned for his large-scale photographic and film works. \nDemand’s work often draws inspiration from reported images and footage of significant historical or social events. He meticulously recreates these scenes using paper models before capturing them through the lens\, using careful angles and composition. This replication process aims to revisit the so-called ‘truth’ and connect the viewer’s history and memories. \nThe exhibition\, curated by independent curator Douglas Fogle\, brings together approximately 70 large-scale photographic works\, wallpaper installations\, and two moving image pieces. It showcases Demand’s exploration of the complex interplay between photographic images and the real world\, his interrogation of ingrained image culture\, and the paradoxes of perception within contemporary society.

SUMMARY:黑眼睛跨劇團 Dark Eyes Performance Lab《末日前的冬之旅 Journey into the Apocalypse》
\nFranz Schubert’s Winterreise\, a song cycle\, is a cherished gem of classical music and a perfect union of music and poetry. With his richly varied and expressive musical style\, Schubert sets to music 24 poems by German poet Wilhelm Müller\, portraying the journey of a heartbroken wanderer. \nIn the production\, Winterreise is reimagined by Dark Eyes Performance Lab’s artistic director and poet Hung Hung\, who brings its subtle poetry to life. In addition to presenting this tale of doomed love as a complete stage narrative\, he charts a course from contemporary Taiwan to an apocalyptic future\, recasting the work as an allegory of civilization and societal evolution. \nThe entire production transforms the stage into a dreamlike spectacle where sun dogs\, green fields and destruction intertwine. Characters survive\, play\, work and struggle in this world\, while fleeting glimpses of hope occasionally emerge. Schubert’s exquisite and profound music becomes the greatest source of comfort and ultimate redemption. The stage design by Liao Yin-chiao\, in collaboration with images and lighting\, creates an incredible visual experience of light and shadow. The dance segments\, choreographed by Yu Yan-fang and performed by Tian Xiao-ci\, offer a unique perspective. What audiences most anticipate is the presentation of the production in two versions! \nJourney into the Apocalypse will be presented in two versions: the classical version\, A Timeless Reproduction of the Classic\, featuring baritone Zhao Fang-hao performing Schubert’s original German version with piano accompaniment; and the jazz version\, Rebirth through Jazz\, with jazz singer Mars Lin (Lin Li-hui) performing a new Taiwanese version arranged by Xie Ming-yan. In addition to experiencing Schubert’s music in its original and timeless form\, audiences will also be immersed in a bold\, contemporary jazz reinterpretation. From blending musical genres to transcending language barriers\, the performers take on the role of wanderers\, traversing the changing tides of time\, emotional shifts\, and the transition between languages and music. Like a storyteller bridging the past and present\, this performance not only offers a re-interpretation of the classic but also an adventurous fusion of Taiwanese literature and music. \n報名 To apply：https://www.opentix.life/event/1871397628185849857

DESCRIPTION:巨擘之聲 再啟篇章 \n台灣首屈一指的室內樂組合 \n蕭士塔高維契六年演出計畫 \n奏響世紀之樂 樂迷必追經典 \nThe Resounding Voices of Masters Begin Anew \nTaiwan’s premier chamber ensemble embarks on a monumental journey with Shostakovich’s six-year performance project\, delivering timeless classics that no music aficionado should miss. \nA Musical Odyssey by “Artrich String Quartet” \nCelebrating nearly a decade of excellence\, the Artrich String Quartet has firmly established itself as Taiwan’s leading chamber ensemble. Comprising exceptional musicians from Taiwan Connection and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra\, the quartet is renowned for its precision and artistry\, consistently earning accolades from audiences and critics alike. \nSince 2018\, Artrich String Quartet has been an annual highlight of the Eslite Chamber Music Festival. In 2024\, they launched a six-year Shostakovich project\, tackling the composer’s highly acclaimed string quartet cycle\, hailed as the most significant since Beethoven’s. This ambitious endeavor marks a bold step in their pursuit of chamber music mastery. \nThis year\, the quartet presents Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3 in F major\, Op. 73\, composed shortly after World War II. The piece juxtaposes a seemingly celebratory opening with deeper undertones of irony\, melancholy\, and self-reflection. \nThe second half of the concert features a collaborative performance of Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet in d minor\, Op. 70\, Souvenir de Florence\, with renowned violist Tsai Bing-Chang and cellist Kao Ping-Kun. Composed in Tchaikovsky’s later years\, this final chamber work combines symphonic grandeur with intricate solo passages\, blending the splendor of Italian Renaissance artistry with distinctive Slavic musical elements. \n2025: A Milestone Celebration \nMarking the 10th anniversary of the Eslite Chamber Music Festival\, the Artrich String Quartet opens the festival with two iconic Russian works. Joined by distinguished chamber musicians Tsai Bing-Chang and Kao Ping-Kun\, the ensemble invites chamber music enthusiasts to experience the poignant and majestic “Voices of Russian Century”. \n｜演出 Performance｜ \n藝心弦樂四重奏 \n小提琴／林一忻（台北市立交響樂團小提琴演奏員） \n小提琴／胡庭瑄（台北市立交響樂團助理首席） \n中提琴／蔡弦修（台北市立交響樂團中提琴演奏員） \n大提琴／張琪翊（國立台北藝術大學管絃與擊樂研究所） \n共同演出 \n中提琴／蔡秉璋（國立清華大學音樂系助理教授） \n大提琴／高炳坤（國立台北藝術大學音樂系副教授） \nArtStrings Quartet \n\nViolin: Lin Yi-Hsin (Taipei Symphony Orchestra)\nViolin: Hu Ting-Hsuan (Assistant Concertmaster\, Taipei Symphony Orchestra)\nViola: Tsai Hsien-Hsiu (Taipei Symphony Orchestra)\nCello: Chang Chi-Yi (Taipei National University of the Arts)\n\nGuest Artists \n\nViola: Tsai Bing-Chang (Assistant Professor\, National Tsing Hua University)\nCello: Kao Ping-Kun (Associate Professor\, Taipei National University of the Arts)\n\n｜曲目 Repertoire｜ \n蕭士塔高維契： F大調第三號弦樂四重奏，作品73 \nD. Perspectives Audio-Vusial Art
身體成為感知的場域\n聲響與影像不再服務於敘事而是直抵直覺 \n解構並重塑\n我們對當代藝術與表演的想像無須尋找歸屬 \n因為此刻，這場共振就是歸屬 \n拋開定義\n讓聲音、影像、身體與空間共構一場超越既定範疇的即時對話—無標籤，無界限，只留下未定義的當下 \n\n\n\n\nUntitled\, Undefined: The Boundless Realm of Audio-Visual Art \nIn an era overwhelmed by labels\,where they infiltrate our identities\, thoughts\, and creations\,even shaping our perception of the world— \nWe are categorized\, defined. At times\, we seek belonging within these labels. At times\, we reduce ourselves to fit into predefined contexts\,until we become mere symbols\, simplified and constrained. \nBut do human beings truly need to be classified? \nWhen boundaries begin to blur\,when sound and image intertwine and evolve\,must we still adhere to predetermined frameworks? \nThis event is not just a live performance—it is an experiment in thought and perception.A collective exploration by artists\,examining the fluid relationship between sound\, image\, and space. \nHere\, different mediums and diverse styles collide\,generating an unnamed visual and auditory language. The body becomes a field of perception\,while sound and image break free from narrative constraints\,reaching directly into intuition. \nDeconstruct and reconstruct—reshape our imagination of contemporary art and performance. There is no need to seek belonging. \nBecause in this moment\, this resonance is belonging. \nLet go of definitions.Let sound\, image\, body\, and space co-create an immediate dialoguebeyond established boundaries—No labels\, no limits\,only the undefined present. \n【Artist／藝術家介紹】 \nByetone（Olaf Bender） \n\n\n\n\n \nBorn in Karl-Marx-Stadt\, East Germany\, in 1968\, Olaf Bender began his creative journey experimenting with 16mm film. His passion for geometric motion and avant-garde expression led him to join the experimental music group AG Geige in 1988. \nAfter the fall of the Berlin Wall\, Bender co-founded the influential Raster-Noton label in 1999\, merging sound and visual art with iconic minimalist design.Under the moniker Byetone\, Bender gained recognition for his energy-driven\, minimalist electronic music\, highlighted in acclaimed releases likeDeath of a Typographer (2008) and Symeta (2011). \nHe has collaborated on sound projects for renowned fashion designers and formed the duoDiamond Version with Carsten Nicolai.Currently managing the rebranded Raster label\, Bender continues to push boundaries with innovative installations and cross-disciplinary artprojects. 以Byetone之名發表《Death of a Typographer》（2008）與《Symeta》（2011），確立獨特的極簡電子音樂風格。 \nMilian Mori \n \nMori shares his deep interest in combining mathematics\, geometry and data with emotion\, dance and fulfillment: technology meets nature\, binary meets fluids\, algorithm meets spirituality\, dualism meets triality\, machine meets human\, randomness meets self similarity. \nAll of his works are trying to open the space which exceeds dualism. His art doesn’t want to answer\, nor does it aim to question. His debut album AS YOU WERE LISTENING is being released via the Raster Media platform\, and captures the spirit of his previous works as well as establishing a new vision in which he endeavours to fuse pop culture with the art world. \nIn AS YOU WERE LISTENING he’s using the distinct language of dub techno whilst attempting to expand the genre’s vocabulary with new changes\, elements and aesthetics. Mori has been involved in numerous collaborations and a wide array of arts projects\, as well as working as a composer\, DIY installation artist\, sound designer\, recording and sound engineer. \n首張專輯《AS YOU WERE LISTENING》由Raster Media發行，以dub techno為語言，並融入全新元素與美學，探索流行文化與藝術世界的交匯。 \nBorn in 1999 in Hsinchu\, he is an artist specializing in interactive art\, sound and installations. \nPassionate about experimental sound\, his installation works often explore the spatiality of sound\, sound generation mechanisms and signal translation. He focuses on methods of sound production while using operational rules to reflect personal experiences and social issues. \nIn audiovisual performances\, he creates through programming\, examining the interplay between sound and visuals. By utilizing the simplest elements\, he extends them into rich and diverse possibilities. \nBorn in 1999 in Chiayi\, Taiwan\, he graduated from the Transdisciplinary of New Media Department at Taipei National University of the Arts. \nCurrently focused on interdisciplinary art and audiovisual performances\, his work explores experimental sound\, real-time image generation and digital signal integration. \nHis artistic core centers on human relationships\, investigating cognitive differences in mutual understanding through distortions in digital signal transmission.
