A Special Exhibition of Animals in Prehistoric Taiwan
\nBeing a subtropical island\, Taiwan has always been home to a diverse array of animals. This special exhibition introduces the common animals in prehistoric Taiwan\,through archaeological research\, through fossils\, archaeological remains\, animal specimens and related artifacts\, helping us comprehend Taiwan’s past natural ecology\, the intricate interplay between humans and their environment\, and the formation of history and culture. \n【Assemble! Taiwan’s prehistoric animals】 \nTaiwan is located in the subtropics\, surrounded by sea\, with rich natural resources and high level of biodiversity. Although most individual animals have disappeared in the flood of history\, we can still learn about these ancient residents of Taiwan through fossils in the strata and animal bones unearthed at archeological sites. \n【Hunting animals】 \nAs omnivores\, for humans\, meat is an important source of food\, and hunting large animals was the key to human evolution. Until modern times\, hunting and fishing were important livelihood activities for many people. The fishing and hunting methods and tools used by people in Taiwan from prehistoric to modern times feature a lot of ecological wisdom. \n【Making the most of everything】 \nSince ancient times\, animals have made significant contributions to human survival. They provide human life necessities; their flesh and blood are used as food\, their fur provides warmth\, and the leftover bones can be made into tools. In many places\, animals are regarded as property or commodities for trading\, as important resources for foreign exchange. \n【Animistic beliefs about animals】 \nIn human society\, in addition to serving as food\, animals are often symbols of spiritual culture. Wild animals are powerful\, mysterious and unpredictable. Prehistoric people revered and worshipped their power. Therefore\, human art often depicted the animals around them; they also appeared in myths\, as totems or decorations\, and were even regarded as ancestors. Of great social or religious significance\, they symbolized the interaction between man and nature. Special Exhibition Hall I\, Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology\, New Taipei City

Yeh Chu-Hsiu Sculpture Exhibition
\nFollowing the solo sculpture exhibitions “Floating Perception\, Floating World” (2015)\, “Mundane Stories” (2018 at Daohe)\, “The Conscious Life” (2020) and “Fragrance Arising\, the Dharma Realm Immersed” (2021)\, Yeh Chu-Hsiu continues to explore themes of transcendence and spirituality. Previous works attempted to capture the serene and dynamic nature of immortals and Buddhas\, using form and color as an interpretive bridge—though these celestial beings ultimately abandon form and color\, leaving behind only the concept of emptiness. \nThis year’s theme\, “Mindful Thought”\, delves into the fundamental structure of human existence. Thoughts have the power to both identify and resolve issues\, embodying the four phenomena of arising\, abiding\, decaying\, and ceasing. They also carry the imprints of past consciousness\, influencing the positive or negative directions of present thoughts. \nIn Buddhism\, the act of contemplation addresses the arising and vanishing of thoughts from an objective\, third-person perspective. This detachment fosters a new layer of intention\, enabling one to both recognize and address thoughts as they arise. \nThrough this exhibition\, Yeh offers a glimpse into the inspirations that shaped each sculpture\, inviting visitors to experience their own subconscious thoughts. By contemplating these thoughts\, visitors may unlock a deeply personal aesthetic experience.

The Memorial Exhibition of Leo Lee
\nLeo Lee\, a pioneering artist and educator in ceramics in Taiwan\, was born in 1943 in Taipei. After graduating with a major in sculpture from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts\, he began his ceramics career in 1970 under the mentorship of the renowned Taiwanese ceramist\, WU Jang-Nung. Over the course of his career\, he operated studios across Taipei and New Taipei City. In addition to being an artist\, LEE was a passionate ceramic art educator\, devoting his life mentoring numerous students. This exhibition commemorates the contributions of this ceramics pioneer to art of ceramics in Taiwan. \nAs a dedicated artist and educator\, LEE played a key role in supporting local ceramics community and advancing ceramics research in Taiwan. He served as a lecturer\, consultant\, and juror for ceramics competitions at this museum. Furthermore\, he gathered and led important ceramists in Taiwan\, helping to enhance the development of local ceramics art. With his vision and selfless dedication\, LEE opened new chapters for Taiwanese ceramics\, ushering an era rich with innovative ideas and creative potential that warrants further research and investigation. \nAccording to LEE’s vision\, this exhibition is conceptually divided into two themes: creation and teaching. In the “creation” theme\, three subtopics—Forms and Shapes\, Observation in Nature\, and From Realism to Abstract—showcase his brilliant artworks and his exploration of the possibilities of ceramics in a casual\, joyful manner. This theme also highlights the diversity of his work\, featuring not only ceramics but also sculptures\, digital prints\, and sketches. The “teaching” theme demonstrates LEE’s dedication and generosity as an educator\, as he selflessly shared his knowledge and experience. He streamlined the creative process so that even children could enjoy making ceramics and bringing art into everyday life. \nSadly\, during the preparation of this exhibition\, LEE passed away. As a result\, LEE’s family and members of his studio completed the final preparations. Special thanks are extended to LEE’s wife LI Mei-Mei and artists from his studio\, KUAN Wen-Hung\, Khong Yao\, CHEN Li-Min\, Barry You\, and CHIU Pi-Hsia\, for their contribution to this exhibition. Special appreciation also goes to CHANG Ching-Yuan and Winnie Yang\, for writing articles for this event. 1F Sunlight Gallery

Yoriyuki Harada Taipei Concert
DESCRIPTION:日本傳奇爵士大樂隊『生活向上委員會』創團者之一原田依幸帶領其四重奏來台演出 \nThe legendary Japanese jazz pianist Yoriyuki Harada\, co-founder of the iconic jazz big band “Living Upward Committee”\, is bringing his quartet to Taiwan for a special performance. \nAt the age of 76\, pianist Yoriyuki Harada continues to captivate audiences. As a music university student\, he co-founded the Living Upward Committee with Kazutoki Umezu. In 1974\, Harada and Umezu traveled to New York\, collaborating with avant-garde musicians and recording the legendary album Living Upward Committee New York Branch. This album\, limited to only 300 copies at its initial release\, is now considered a collector’s treasure. In 2016\, Off Note reissued the CD\, calling it “OUR JAZZ = The Origin of Contemporary Music”. \nAfter returning to Japan\, Harada\, Umezu\, Junji Mori and Takashi Kikuchi formed the group Collective Evacuation\, releasing the album Sono Zenya. They performed in jazz clubs like AKTEA\, later establishing the Living Upward Committee Orchestra\, which remains a training ground for many of Japan’s prominent free jazz musicians. \nFollowing the disbandment of Living Upward Committee\, Harada founded a new group called Fresh Corps. His collaboration with bassist Hideaki Mochizuki began during this period and continues to this day\, with performances primarily in a quartet format. \nHarada remains active\, performing regularly every month. His piano playing retains its signature blend of elegance and wildness. After inviting his long-time collaborator Kazutoki Umezu to Taiwan twice\, it is a joy to welcome Harada himself this time. This performance was made possible thanks to drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka\, who is also accompanying Kazuki Tomokawa in another concert. Thank you\, Ishizuka-san\, for making this happen!
