SUMMARY:草間彌生的「軌跡」與「奇跡」 “Trajectory” and “Miracle”: KUSAMA Yayoi 1951-2005 from W Collection & More
\nAt age 96\, Yayoi Kusama remains among the most iconic and subversive figures in contemporary art history. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture\, Japan\, she lived in United States from 1957 to 1973 before returning to Japan\, where she currently resides. Despite training in traditional nihonga (Japanese-style painting) during her early years\, Kusama resisted the constraints of conventional artistic forms. Instead\, she transformed her personal experiences into a distinctive visual vocabulary. Her oeuvre spans a wide range of media\, including painting\, sculpture\, collage\, printmaking\, performance\, video\, large-scale installations and even fashion. Celebrated globally for her vibrant colors and audacious\, original subjects and forms\, Kusama remains at the forefront of European and American avant-garde art movements\, and continues to be a defining force in the global art scene today. \nThe 1990s marked a pivotal period for Yayoi Kusama\, as she re-emerged in the international art scene with explosive success following her return to Japan. In 1993\, she became the first contemporary artist to present a solo exhibition at Japan Pavilion of Venice Biennale. Her status as a major figure in contemporary art was cemented in the five years that followed\, with retrospectives at Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. In 1998\, she was invited by then-director of Taipei Fine Arts Museum\, Lin Mun-Lee and curator Fumio Nanjo\, to create the large-scale installation\, Dots Obsession\, for Taipei Biennial. The work occupies the museum’s courtyard with seven fluorescent pink balloons covered with black polka dots. It was a defining moment in her exploration of the dialogue between large-scale sculptures and public spaces. This exhibition also marked the beginning of an enduring relationship between this globally celebrated artist and Taiwan. \n“‘Trajectory’ and ‘Miracle’” opens with a re-created version of Dots Obsession\, the very work that marked Kusama’s Taiwan debut\, and features 70 meticulously selected works spanning from 1951 to 2005. Organized into four sections—“Kusama in Full Bloom”\, “Dots as Origins”\, “Kusama’s Quiescence” and “Love Forever”—the exhibition traces the artist’s creative explorations and experimentations throughout her career\, while reflecting on the vicissitudes of her life journey. This exhibition draws on the unique vision of W Collection\, and builds on the success of “‘Trajectory’ and ‘Miracle’ — KUSAMA Yayoi 1951-2005 from W Collection” at Aomori Museum of Art in Japan. MoNTUE has collaborated closely with Yayoi Kusama Studio to not only recreate Dots Obsession\, but also present a selection of rarely exhibited performance documentations and couture pieces\, highlighting the formative influence of her early happenings on her broader artistic trajectory. \nUpon entering MoNTUE\, visitors are greeted by massive organic forms that stretch across the lofty exhibition space. Moving through this area\, they are transported into Kusama’s world—immersed in an infinite repetition of dots. Large-scale installations such as Dots Obsession\, alongside soft sculptures and her signature paintings\, capture the essence of “Kusama in Full Bloom” after 1985\, a period marked by her rise to global prominence. During this time\, her work shed the melancholy of the 1970s\, radiating a vital and liberated creative energy. The third-floor gallery space\, resembling a corridor through time\, traces her artistic trajectory in “Dots as Origins” by showcasing her early dot motifs and nihonga works\, illustrating how the young Kusama translated her perceptions of nature\, familial dynamics\, and the social landscape of World War II through her paintbrush. \nHer period of setbacks in the United States and the tumultuous years following her return to Japan in 1973 are explored in “Kusama’s Quiescence”. Numerous pastel\, ink and collage-based two-dimensional works delve into the artist’s fears\, anxiety\, despair and yearning during this chaotic phase of her life. The basement “Love Forever” section highlights the happenings she initiated in the late-1960s. This area interweaves four documentaries of her avant-garde performances\, including Flower Orgy\, with the large-scale installation Driving Image\, and several precious\, hand-painted garments she created for her early happenings. These elements reveal the complex imagination that this unparalleled artist has brought to the public perception of anti-war activism\, sexuality\, the body and love. \nThe “‘Trajectory’ and ‘Miracle’” exhibition sheds light on the intricately interwoven relationship between Yayoi Kusama’s life experiences and artistic language. By revisiting the “trajectory” of her artistic practices\, the exhibition scrutinizes how the artist has persistently forged new paths off possibility while embracing the “miracle” of art and life.

The Stutter of History
\nAfter three years of planning\, Taipei Fine Arts Museum is delighted to present the first solo exhibition of German conceptual artist Thomas Demand from 18 January to 11 May 2025. Born in Munich in 1964\, Demand primarily works in Berlin and Los Angeles and is renowned for his large-scale photographic and film works. \nDemand’s work often draws inspiration from reported images and footage of significant historical or social events. He meticulously recreates these scenes using paper models before capturing them through the lens\, using careful angles and composition. This replication process aims to revisit the so-called ‘truth’ and connect the viewer’s history and memories. \nThe exhibition\, curated by independent curator Douglas Fogle\, brings together approximately 70 large-scale photographic works\, wallpaper installations\, and two moving image pieces. It showcases Demand’s exploration of the complex interplay between photographic images and the real world\, his interrogation of ingrained image culture\, and the paradoxes of perception within contemporary society.

Chen Cheng-Hsiung at 90 An Abstract Painter and His Collection
\n“The nature of my art is ‘evocative’ rather than ‘descriptive’. Like music\, it is meant to stimulate inner feeling rather than tell a story. It is intended as an intense expression of the inner experience—a visual metaphor\, not a visual narrative.” \n–Chen Cheng-Hsiung\, The Sayings of Chen Cheng-Hsiung on Art \n不僅是一位藝術家。 \nChen Cheng-Hsiung has enriched Taiwan’s art world through an impressive range of contributions over the course of his career—from his abstract painting\, scholarly research on indigenous and Qing dynasty clothing and jewelry\, art education\, academic publications on abstract art\, to his promotion of Taiwan’s artists to the international stage. These diverse roles established Chen as an early voice in cross-disciplinary dialogue\, weaving together his theoretical work and traditional collecting practices in a distinctive approach to artistic creation. \nA pivotal moment in Chen’s artistic journey came in 1966 when he began collecting clothing and objects of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan\, drawing inspiration from their vibrant colors and abstract patterns for his own work. Years later\, in 1993\, he toured the Beijing Palace Museum\, Shenyang Palace Museum\, and British Museum and found himself similarly fascinated with the displayed imperial garments\, leading him to build and study a collection of Qing dynasty clothing. The depth of these influences can be seen in the striking connections between Chen’s lyrical abstract paintings and his collected objects\, particularly in his sophisticated use of color; his approach to color relationships echoes contemporary design principles\, lending his work a modern sensibility while reinforcing his contributions to cross-disciplinary artistic practice. \nChen’s biography was written by the renowned Paris-based artist Chang Tzu-wei\, who captured the essence of Chen’s work in the work’s title\, An Ode to Joy on Canvas. This celebration of the delight Chen’s art brings to viewers stems in part to the natural musicality and flow of Chen’s brushstrokes\, infusing his works with the essence of the four seasons. This essence conveys a sense of convergence across time and his works—whether amid urban clamor or introspective contemplation—speak to the unique atmospheres of each season: the emergent lushness of spring\, the charming brilliance of summer\, the tranquility of autumn and the somber chill of winter. \nIn this exhibition—Chen Cheng-Hsiung at 90:An Abstract Painter and His Collection—KMFA aims to illuminate the cultural dimensions of Chen’s artwork through his collected objects. For instance\, his collection of indigenous pieces reveals marine elements that find direct expression in his own abstract paintings of the lyrical ocean. Moreover\, the dialogue between East and West emerges clearly in his “Window” and “Digital Space” series\, where calligraphic lines resonate with embroidered patterns\, Chen’s bold use of color extending beyond the traditionally Eastern medium while also incorporating the essence of Western abstraction. This artistic fusion brings to mind Liu Yuxi’s meditation in Record of the Dong Clan’s Wula Collection\, where he notes that “the scene emerges beyond the work”. In this way\, Chen’s work first strikes viewers with its commanding presence\, but deeper contemplation reveals intricate details that delicately embellish his artistic vision.

Program X-site 2025: The Pore Landscape Project
\nAbout Program X-site \nBased on the outdoor plaza of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM)\, Program X-site (2014 –) launches an annual open call for experimental temporary installation projects. From multiple perspectives\, such as architectural construction\, contemporary art\, environmental research and public participation\, the event encourages interdisciplinary and publicly engaged projects that emphasize innovative experimentation. Meanwhile\, it inspires the public to imagine and explore the issues related to public space\, urban environment and human development. Over the years\, Program X-site has supported various pioneering projects proposed by cutting-edge teams in architecture and art\, establishing itself as an important incubator of openness and experimentation for young and mid-career generations in Taiwan. \nThe Pore Landscape Project\, conceived by the interdisciplinary team Studio Superficial\, was selected as the 12th laureate in 2025. \nAbout The Pore Landscape Project  \nTaipei is the city most severely affected by the urban heat island effect in Taiwan\, and rising temperatures have gradually reshaped the way people interact with public plazas. Simulating the heat dissipation mechanism of pores\, Studio Superficial has conceived an installation consisting of hundreds of “porous” devices made from recycled aluminum\, symbolically occupying the TFAM outdoor plaza. Embedded into the public space like a breathing carpet with pores\, the installation has initiated a landscape experiment exploring the relationship between people and their surroundings. Constructed from tangible objects and intangible mist\, the installation integrates the concept of microclimate landscape design to regulate light and shadow\, wind direction\, humidity and temperature. It attempts to alleviate the stationary heat on-site while awakening the public’s bodily perception\, ultimately redefining the interaction between the plaza and its visitors. \nVisiting reminder \n1.
DESCRIPTION:返璞歸真 鄭宗龍向山林借舞 \n再現接掌雲門首部作品 舞者擬聲凝像找自然 \nReturning to the basics\, Zheng Zonglong borrows dance techniques from mountains and forests \nRe-enacting the first work of Cloud Gate Dancers\, using simulated voices and images to find nature \n\n\n\n【音樂家的無聊人生】 雲門用「聲音」跳舞？ \n[The Boring Life of a Musician] Cloud Gate dances with “sound”? An interview with a music YouTuber! \nIn 2020\, the world paused. During this pause\, Cheng Chung-lung\, who had just taken over as the artistic director of Cloud Gate\, rethought the relationship between man and nature during the quarantine period after completing a 63-day European tour to race against the epidemic. He decided to create a work that came from nature. \nWhen he was a child\, Zheng Zonglong’s father often took him to Nanshi River to fish. The river meandered through the rolling mountains\, the whisper of the wind accompanied by the chirping of mountain birds\, and the young boy adjusted his rhythm and steps according to the terrain\, opening his ears to capture the rhythm of the surroundings. Nature quietly became his unique dance teacher. [Extended reading: Zheng Zonglong of Cloud Gate\, born from mud] \nThis experience led Zheng Zonglong to get close to nature in his spare time. When he was conceiving Dingguang\, he decided to take the dancers to climb the Hehuan North Peak. Despite the advice of others\, they still chose to explore with their bodies\, looking for the original rhythm in the mountains and forests\, and absorbing the instinct of movement. [Extended reading: Decided to go up\, really going to the mountains! ] \nBack in the rehearsal room of Cloud Gate\, Zheng Zonglong invited Zhang Xuan\, who is a classical musician\, to record the chirping of insects and birds\, the sound of wind and rain in the mountains and forests with five-line music scores. The dancers learned to combine the tone and rhythm by reading the music scores. The musician Lin Qiang used minimalist music to harmonize the overall sound field and inject soul into the dance. \nZheng Zonglong abandoned the strong visual effects of the stage and chose to surround the stage with pure white curtains to create a seemingly boundless pure space. Li Wanling’s lights flowed with the dancers’ movements\, leaving traces of change in the long river of time\, and reflected on the off-white costumes designed by Chen Shaoyan and the dancers’ skin. \nWhat was even more challenging was that the lights were bright throughout the performance\, and the dancers had no time to breathe. During the 65-minute dance\, the dancers continued to dance and sing\, condensing into moments of mountains and forests\, showing extraordinary concentration and perseverance. Torben Ibs\, a senior dance critic for German magazine Tanz\, was impressed by the work and praised it as “the dancers’ amazing performance\, showing the strength worthy of the world’s top dance company.” \n“Dingguang is about letting the dancer shine through the body and voice.” Zheng Zonglong believes that the moment of concentration and gaze is the moment of shining. After five years\, Dingguang has received rave reviews from the media and reappeared in New Taipei and Tainan with pure voice and body. \nIn 1973\, Lin Hwai-min founded Cloud Gate. SUMMARY:鋼琴合作藝術聲樂篇系列音樂會（一） The Art of Vocal Accompanying (Ｉ)
\nIn the field of piano collaboration\, “vocal collaboration” is a very complex and profound subject\, especially the performance of “art songs”\, which can best demonstrate the performance skills and connotations of pianists. Pianists not only need to assist vocalists in singing\, but also need to express the artistic conception of the poem to the extreme in the performance. \nThis is the beginning of a series of concerts\, the main purpose of which is to explore the essence of the “art of vocal collaboration” and experience how pianists assist singers in singing and interpretation. Starting with the UK\, the audience will get to know British composers and their art songs\, and immerse themselves in the beautiful music interwoven with singing\, poetry and piano. \n報名 To apply：https://www.opentix.life/event/1876479570442891265 \n演出曲目 Performance Track \nEdward Elgar: Two Songs\, Op. 41 No. 2 \n1. Jun T. LAI: A Retrospective
\n“Jun T. Lai: A Retrospective”\, curated by art critic Chang Ching-Wen\, symbolizes the pure yet profound and versatile yet consistent attributes of the artist’s work. Jun T. Lai (b. 1953) was inspired by Liao Chi-Chun during her college years and began to explore colors as a means of expression. While studying in Japan\, she formulated the core concepts for her later spatial works. \nIn the 1980s\, she delved into the potential of painting through abstract arrangements of pure colors\, earning recognition in major competition exhibitions\, including the Contemporary Art Trends R.O.C. Subsequently\, she established the Studio of Contemporary Art (SOCA) to advocate for avant-garde art. In the 1990s\, she revisited Eastern aesthetics\, which led to new insights that inspired her to draw from nature and her inner feelings through her sensibility. Following 2007\, she focused on living and creating art on Taiwan’s eastern coast\, redirecting her attention to the independent expression of colors while expressing a profound desire for nature. \nThis exhibition will explore the artist’s creative journey through four themes spanning from the 1970s to the present. It will feature nearly one hundred exhibits\, including oil\, acrylic\, and mixed media paintings\, as well as sculptures\, installations\, hand drawings\, manuscripts\, videos\, and archives.

SUMMARY:2025 管風琴推廣音樂會 Mini Organ Concert《巴洛克之巔 The Pinnacle of Baroque》
Follow the time machine and enter the Baroque era\, the most glorious era of organ music \n巴洛克時期是管風琴音樂最為輝煌的年代，宛如樂器中的皇室，它的音色曾在教堂裡回蕩，為無數世人帶來感動與靈魂的洗滌。 \nThe Baroque period was the most glorious era for organ music. Like a royal instrument\, its sound once reverberated in churches\, moving and cleansing the souls of countless people. This concert will begin from this great period\, taking the audience back to the 17th and 18th centuries and revealing the story of how the organ became the “king of musical instruments”. \nThis performance invites Lin Weilun and He Zhongmou to join forces on trumpet to engage in a wonderful musical dialogue with organist Yu Xiaoyi. The audience will relive the glory of the Baroque period through the various styles of organ music and further feel the grandeur of the “King of Musical Instruments”. \n \n曲目 Tracks \n巴赫：D小調觸技曲，作品565 \n馬爾蒂尼：給小號與管風琴的觸技曲 \n弗蘭切斯基尼：給兩把小號與管風琴的D大調奏鳴曲 \n雅基尼：給兩把小號與管風琴的第二號奏鳴曲 \n衛斯登庫勒：《聖哉頌》節慶曲 \n特拉維斯：《純真之心，當歡欣喜悅》觸技曲 \nBach: Tactus in D minor\, Op. 565 \nMartini: Tactus for trumpet and organ \nFranceschini: Sonata in D major for two trumpets and organ \nYakini: Sonata No. 2 for two trumpets and organ \nWeisden Kuller: Festive Song of “Ave Maria” \nTravis: “Innocent Heart\, Rejoice” Touch Song \n報名 \nThe performance will begin with Bach’s classic masterpiece “Tactile in D Minor”. This work showcases the performer’s skills with magnificent touches\, unfolding a delicate interweaving of melody and harmony. Its complex form structure and strong musical emotions make it a symbol of Baroque music and an irreplaceable treasure in the organ repertoire. \nThe next performance will further showcase another side of the Baroque period – the concerto dialogue between brass instruments and keyboard instruments. \nGiovanni Battista Franceschini’s Sonata in D major features double trumpets and the organ\, creating a light and gorgeous timbre. The bright melody of the trumpet is like sunlight penetrating through stained glass\, while the organ is laid out with rich harmonies\, like the solemn celestial echoes in the church. This work not only presents the brilliance of music\, but also captures the luxury and agility of Baroque music. \nNext\, Giuseppe Jacchini’s Sonata for Double Trumpet and Organ will continue to lead the audience to explore the interactive spirit in Baroque music. This work features a bright dialogue between two trumpets\, which echo each other and interweave beautiful melodic lines. The organ provides heavy and warm harmonic support in this dialogue\, like a stable foundation in the church. This piece of music captures the joyful atmosphere of the ceremony at that time with a light yet solemn rhythm\, showing the joy and elegance in Baroque music. \nIn addition to the Baroque classics\, this concert also features two contemporary American solo organ works. Through diverse arrangements and rich repertoire\, the audience will experience the diverse styles of organ music—from the beauty of a simple solo to the dialogue between double trumpets and the organ. As the notes flow through the space\, the brightness of the brass tubes and the grandeur of the organ blend with each other. We can not only relive the glory of the Baroque period\, but also read the story of the organ itself from these pieces of music.

The Luminous Paradise of Chang Li-Yeh
\nEthereal Bloom – The Luminous Paradise of Chang Li-Yeh presents a radiant world where blossoms shimmer in divine light and fantastical creatures roam under deep blue skies. Inspired by his painting Blossoming Tree\, this exhibition captures the sacred beauty and fleeting sorrow of life at its most vibrant. \nFeaturing works from the past decade\, including the series Butterfly Man\, Fairy Tale Paradise\, Animism and Aura\, the show traces Chang’s journey from whimsical dreamscapes to spiritual utopias. Alongside these are his early newspaper per illustrations and expressive series like Self-Portrait and Social Outcast\, revealing a transformation from raw\, intuitive forms to intricate\, symbolic compositions. \nCurated by Huang Chih-Wei\, the exhibition explores the idea of “ephemeral dreams”—moments that sparkle and vanish like morning dew. In worlds filled with playful monsters\, sacred animals\, and floating blossoms\, time stretches and folds. Ethereal Bloom invites visitors to wander through Chang’s luminous landscapes and glimpse the artist’s innermost visions of joy\, loss and renewal. \nChang Li-Yeh was born in Chiayi. He graduated from the Department of Sociology at Soochow University in Taiwan. In his youth\, he developed a love for reading and writing literature and poetry. Like many budding artists\, he enjoyed doodling and habitually filled every blank space in his textbooks\, which ultimately became an indelible “bad habit”. This tendency shaped his subconscious\, leading to the brimming\, compact imagery found in his paintings today. Perhaps it is precisely this “bad habit” that contributes to the unique characteristics of his work. \nChang’s early works centered on social issues\, portraying the struggles of marginalized communities. His Betel Nut Beauty series explored the objectification of young women in Taiwan’s industrial cities\, while Landslide reflected on climate change and ecological destruction. These works captured the raw\, often surreal contradictions of human nature and politics. \nIn recent years\, his focus has turned inward\, exploring the subconscious. He reimagines the body and soul as a microcosm of emotions\, memories\, and desires. His figures morph and flow\, their limbs entwined with mountains\, rivers\, and blooming landscapes—an intimate fusion of self and nature. In the Butterfly Man series\, he reflects on love\, longing and memory\, while the Small Universe series builds a connection between the body and the natural world\, creating a sanctuary where every tree\, stream\, and peak resonates with harmony.\n\n仙樹，2020，162 X 226cm，油彩、畫布 \n\n蝴蝶人-5，2014，112 X 145cm，壓克力、麥克筆、畫布 \n\n萬物有靈，2016，45 X 45cm，壓克力、畫布

\nΔDesignArt 2025 is Taiwan’s first art fair platform centered on the perspectives of designers. It showcases a diverse range of works across various fields\, including crafts\, printing\, bookbinding\, speculative design\, floral art\, objects and experimental pieces. Utilizing the unique layout of hotel rooms\, the exhibition features 15 distinct thematic rooms under the framework of design art. ΔDesignArt aims to establish a database of emerging design artists\, seeking to incorporate different variables (Δ delta) to broaden our vision and understanding of creation. The goal is to present a collective image of Taiwan’s contemporary expressions with distinctive personal styles and to propel these emerging creators onto the international stage. \nWe believe that exhibitions concretely present curatorial viewpoints\, while forums stimulate focused discussions between viewers and speakers. These discussions\, in turn\, offer new insights when revisiting the curated content of ΔDesignArt. This year’s forum brings together scholars and experts from Taiwan\, Japan and Korea. Notably\, we have invited Kang Jae-young\, Korea’s leading contemporary craft curator\, to Taiwan. He will engage in a dialogue with Hsieh Hsin-Han\, founder of Soil and Seed\, who represented Taiwan at the KCDF and is also part of ΔDesignArt exhibition lineup. They will share the latest trends in the contemporary craft markets of Taiwan and Korea. From Japan\, the innovative experience design team Konel\, known for their impressive showcases at Milan Design Week and the Osaka Expo\, will not only exhibit their work in Taiwan but also share insights into the latest Japanese technologies and design integrations. \nBuilding on the enthusiastic response to last year’s lecture focusing on Collectible Design\, this year’s forum will delve deeper into the future market potential of this trend. We have invited Zoey Yeh\, Creative Application Integration Manager at Yu-Hsiu Museum of Art; Sid Chen\, Chairman of AICA Taiwan; and Emerson Wang\, Artistic Director of Taoyuan Convention and Exhibition Center\, for a panel discussion. Through sharing experiences of integrating art and design in museums\, we aim to explore market potential and\, from an artistic perspective\, glimpse new trends of design within the art market. \nFurthermore\, this year’s exhibition extends beyond the venue\, collaborating with the adjacent Young Designers’ Exhibition. Under the theme of Nangang Design Art Week\, a special lecture will be held\, featuring Yan Bo-Jun\, founder of Three Pages Design; Gu Guang-Yi\, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Applied Arts\, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University; and Zeng Xi-Kai\, Assistant Professor at Department of Industrial Design\, Shih Chien University. They will focus on the artistic creative styles observed in student graduation projects. The Future of Collectible Design in Art Market \nCollectible Design風潮從歐美吹起，10年前席捲日本東京，至今許多網路媒體與相關藝術拍賣平台都開始討論，國外亦有「Design Gallery」或「Design Miami」、「Salone del Mobile Milano」、比利時「Collectible」、「DESIGNART TOKYO」等展會，這股熱潮終於也吹向台灣，在台灣當代藝術市場非常蓬勃的當下，如何從當代藝術觀點回望這股從設計興起的創作熱潮？ \nThe trend of Collectible Design originated in Europe and America\, swept through Tokyo a decade ago\, and has since become a topic of discussion across various online media and art auction platforms. Internationally\, exhibitions like “Design Gallery”\, “Design Miami”\, “Salone del Mobile Milano”\, Belgium’s “Collectible” and “DESIGNART TOKYO” have embraced this movement. Now\, this wave has reached Taiwan. Given the vibrancy of Taiwan’s contemporary art market\, how can we\, from the perspective of contemporary art\, reflect on this design-driven creative trend? Is there room in the art market to accommodate such works? \nResponsible for product selection planning and creator exhibition planning in the museum shop. SUMMARY:行者十步 Footprints of the Walker：蔡明亮 Tsai Ming-Liang
\nThe Walker is more than a pilgrim through time and space\, it’s the transformation of imagery. \nIn 2011\, while rehearsing the stage play Only You\, in the monologue The Fish of Lee Kang-sheng: The Journey in the Desert\, Lee walked at an extremely slow pace for just a few meters. He shifts between the roles of Tsai Ming-liang’s father and the Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang. This movement profoundly affected Tsai. These steps both suspended and advanced the forward motion. It encapsulated the essence of the decades-long collaboration between Tsai and Lee. It also planted the seed for the open form of cinema Tsai has been nurturing. \nIf Lee’s slow walk is the crystallization of his years of collaboration with Tsai\, then The Walker series\, which they completed between 2012 and 2024\, can be seen as a grand artistic journey across disciplines\, realized through Lee ’s embodiment of a red-robed monk in slow\, deliberate motion. \nThis series includes ten films of varying lengths—No Form\, Walker\, Sleepwalk\, Diamond Sutra\, Walking on Water\, Journey to the West\, No No Sleep\, Sand\, Where\, and Abiding Nowhere—as well as the stage play The Monk from Tang Dynasty. Additionally\, it extends into cinematic exhibitions such as No No Sleep at MoNTUE －Tsai Ming-Liang Solo Exhibition\, Walker\, Tsai Ming-Liang at the Zhuangwei Dune Visitor Center and A Quest at the Centre Pompidou. Together\, they explore the fusion of film and space. \nFootprints of the Walker: Tsai Ming-Liang refers to the ten films\, pointing to this body of work inspired by the 17-year-long journey of Xuanzang in search of sutras from India. Over the past decade\, The Walker series has set foot not only in Taipei\, Yunlin\, and Yilan but also Hong Kong\, Kuching\, and Tokyo\, and extended as far as Marseille\, Paris and Washington D.C. Through long takes\, the films depict the monk’s journey outward from Taipei in meditative movement—from the inner self to the broader world. \nWithin the gallery space\, these films do not exist independently but interconnect to form an organic whole. Presented alongside paper\, sutras\, mirrors\, chairs\, sketches\, paintings\, objects\, and archival materials\, an immersive visual environment is created through multi-screen installations and video art. Light and shadow\, color and texture\, missed encounters and fateful meetings\, life and illusion\, the finite and the infinite—these elements weave together to shape the unique world of the Walker. \nFootprints of the Walker: Tsai Ming-Liang symbolizes the artistic transformation of Tsai as a director\, opening up a new cinematic pilgrimage. Imagine the ancient monk from Chang’an who\, defying the imperial decree\, set out resolutely on his westward journey in search of the Dharma. Similarly\, Tsai uses film as his scripture\, moving between cinema\, theater and exhibition spaces\, continuously  searching beyond spatial\, media\, and artistic boundaries—to carve out a Walker’s path that gazes upon time itself.

For three years\, artists received minimal support\, and the cultural industry fell into an unprecedented crisis. This hardship echoes the time of Black Death in Europe\, when society neared collapse and people turned to “masks” as a way to cope with plague and the anxiety of survival. \nIt was in this context that the Taiwan Mask Festival was born.Through the symbol of the mask\, Guang Lian Theatre seeks to rediscover the meaning of life and connect cultural spirits of the past\, present and future. \n戴上面具，也許我們才能更真實地看見自己 \nA mask is not just a cover—it is also a revelation. \nThroughout human history\, masks have never been mere decoration—they are vessels to the spiritual world. From ancient shamans’ rituals and religious ceremonies to theater and folk culture\, masks have always held a sacred and irreplaceable role. They symbolize identity and offer protection and empowerment to the wearer. \nIn modern society\, while masks may seem distant from our daily lives\, they are\, in fact\, deeply embedded in our existence. \nFrom professional roles to social class\, we constantly shift between identities. Whether as a father\, a teacher\, an artist or even a digital persona on social media—each is like a mask we wear\, navigating between reality and the virtual. But as we become accustomed to wearing these masks\, do we also start to fear the true “self”? \nThe mask is both a shield and a path of discovery. \nIn the performing arts\, masks help performers enter character swiftly\, overcome inner barriers and express themselves more freely. On a psychological level\, masks serve as tools that allow people to uncover aspects of themselves they were previously unaware of\, sometimes even facilitating healing and reconnecting with their inner worlds. \nWe are stepping into an era where the virtual and the real intertwine. \nDigital identities in the metaverse and curated images on social media are today’s “masks”. As we shape ourselves through technology\, can we still truly know who we are? \nThe creation of Taiwan Mask Festival is not only a tribute to traditional culture—it is also a question posed to the future world. \nThrough this artistic celebration\, we hope to inspire people to reconsider the meaning of “masks”. They are not merely relics of the past but vital keys to self-exploration in the future. \nBy putting on a mask\, perhaps we can finally see ourselves more clearly.

Brilliance of German and Austrian Classics—胡乃元＆TC室內樂 Nai-Yuan Hu & Taiwan Connection
DESCRIPTION:大師風采 交映頂尖琴音 \n細膩演繹 默契超絕 \n嚴選德奧經典之作 \n極致璀璨 品味永恆 \nMasterful Performances with Exquisite Chemistry \nRefined interpretations\, extraordinary synergy \nCarefully selected German and Austrian masterpieces \nAn evening of dazzling brilliance and timeless elegance \n \n小提琴家胡乃元曾獲比利時伊莉莎白女王國際音樂大賽首獎，被英國BBC音樂雜誌稱作「全方位的演奏者」。 \nNai-Yuan Hu & Taiwan Connection \nViolinist Nai-Yuan Hu\, first-prize winner at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium\, was hailed as a “complete musician” by BBC Music Magazine. Since founding Taiwan Connection (TC) in 2004\, where he serves as Artistic Director\, Hu has dedicated himself to leading Taiwan’s young musicians in bringing classical music’s enduring beauty to audiences far and wide. \nFor his third appearance at the Eslite Chamber Music Festival\, Hu collaborates with outstanding young international musicians: violinist Xuan-Hao Hsu\, a Curtis Institute of Music graduate with an extensive touring history in Europe and the Americas; violist Shih-Hsien Tsai\, principal violist of the Ciconia Consort in The Hague\, Netherlands; and cellist Shih-Lin Chen\, former member of Canada’s Borealis String Quartet and a prominent mid-career artist in Taiwan. Together\, this ensemble of acclaimed musicians will deliver the ultimate purity and grandeur of German and Austrian chamber music. \nProgram Highlights \nThe concert opens with Schubert’s String Trio in B-flat major\, D. 471\, a single-movement gem where lyrical and radiant melodies flow effortlessly through beautifully intertwined voices\, showcasing seamless interplay among the instruments. \nNext is Haydn’s celebrated String Quartet in d minor\, Op. 76\, No. 2 (Quinten). The dramatic opening features a bold fifth-interval motif\, which develops through an ever-changing tapestry of stormy tension and triumphant resolution\, concluding with a bright\, jubilant finale. \nThe second half presents Brahms’ String Quartet No. 2 in a minor\, Op. 51\, No. 2\, one of three essential works of his lifetime. The quartet reflects the composer’s deep bond with violinist and friend Joseph Joachim\, whose motto\, “Free but lonely\,” weaves throughout the music. Brahms uses the quartet’s four voices to evoke symphonic grandeur and heartfelt intimacy. The final movement adds a touch of Hungarian folk character\, enriching the work’s emotional and textural complexity. \nPerformance Details \nUnder the leadership of Nai-Yuan Hu\, Taiwan Connection celebrates its 20th anniversary with these timeless German and Austrian chamber music masterpieces. Their artistry ensures an unforgettable listening experience\, elevating the Eslite Chamber Music Festival’s 10th Anniversary to new heights of brilliance and passion. \nWe invite music lovers to immerse themselves in the splendor of classical music and experience an evening of profound inspiration and unforgettable artistry. \n｜演出 Performance｜ \n小提琴／胡乃元（Taiwan Connection音樂總監） \n小提琴／許軒豪（美國寇蒂斯音樂院學士） \n中提琴／蔡士賢（荷蘭Ciconia Consort弦樂團中提琴首席） \n大提琴／陳世霖（加拿大Borealis四重奏前大提琴家） \n\nViolin: Nai-Yuan Hu (Artistic Director\, Taiwan Connection)\nViolin: Xuan-Hao Hsu (Curtis Institute of Music Graduate)\nViola: Shih-Hsien Tsai (Principal Violist\, Ciconia Consort\, Netherlands)\nCello: Shih-Lin Chen (Former Cellist\, Borealis Quartet\, Canada)\n\n｜曲目 Repertoire｜ \n舒伯特：降Ｂ大調弦樂三重奏，作品471 \nF.
