For three years\, artists received minimal support\, and the cultural industry fell into an unprecedented crisis. This hardship echoes the time of Black Death in Europe\, when society neared collapse and people turned to “masks” as a way to cope with plague and the anxiety of survival. \nIt was in this context that the Taiwan Mask Festival was born.Through the symbol of the mask\, Guang Lian Theatre seeks to rediscover the meaning of life and connect cultural spirits of the past\, present and future. \n戴上面具，也許我們才能更真實地看見自己 \nA mask is not just a cover—it is also a revelation. \nThroughout human history\, masks have never been mere decoration—they are vessels to the spiritual world. From ancient shamans’ rituals and religious ceremonies to theater and folk culture\, masks have always held a sacred and irreplaceable role. They symbolize identity and offer protection and empowerment to the wearer. \nIn modern society\, while masks may seem distant from our daily lives\, they are\, in fact\, deeply embedded in our existence. \nFrom professional roles to social class\, we constantly shift between identities. Whether as a father\, a teacher\, an artist or even a digital persona on social media—each is like a mask we wear\, navigating between reality and the virtual. But as we become accustomed to wearing these masks\, do we also start to fear the true “self”? \nThe mask is both a shield and a path of discovery. \nIn the performing arts\, masks help performers enter character swiftly\, overcome inner barriers and express themselves more freely. On a psychological level\, masks serve as tools that allow people to uncover aspects of themselves they were previously unaware of\, sometimes even facilitating healing and reconnecting with their inner worlds. \nWe are stepping into an era where the virtual and the real intertwine. \nDigital identities in the metaverse and curated images on social media are today’s “masks”. As we shape ourselves through technology\, can we still truly know who we are? \nThe creation of Taiwan Mask Festival is not only a tribute to traditional culture—it is also a question posed to the future world. \nThrough this artistic celebration\, we hope to inspire people to reconsider the meaning of “masks”. They are not merely relics of the past but vital keys to self-exploration in the future. \nBy putting on a mask\, perhaps we can finally see ourselves more clearly.

Taiwan-Japan Interdisciplinary Theater and Film Co-Creation Experiment
What is JANUS Project? \n“Janus” is the Roman god of beginnings and transitions\, depicted with two faces to symbolize looking to the past and the future. Inspired by this concept\, the JANUS Project explores the boundaries between theater and film\, igniting a creative and reflective dialogue. \nCurated by Kai Liao (Artistic Director of Fantasy Theatre) and experimental film researcher Chun-Ching Hsieh\, the JANUS Project invites renowned Japanese director and media artist Kei Shichiri to participate. Centered around “Theater × Film × Personal Narrative”\, this interdisciplinary experiment connects past and future\, inner and outer worlds\, and reality and dreams. \nFantasy Theatre hopes to rekindle its founding spirit—light and fantasy—through this collaboration. By weaving together Shichiri’s distinctive language of Expanded Cinema and theatrical expression\, the project seeks new ways to question the world and the self. \nIn 2024\, the project features eight workshops around six core themes: dreams\, media\, memory\, history\, landscape and transformation. These workshops focus on the intersection of theater and film media as well as the perception and narration of self. Participants engage in thematic lectures\, collaborative discussions and creative exercises guided by Chun-Ching Hsieh. They also exchange ideas with Taiwanese and Japanese creators\, study Kei Shichiri’s artistic philosophies and techniques\, and draw inspiration from Fantasy Theatre’s foundational themes to create personal or collective works across literary\, historical and contemporary contexts. \nThe program includes screenings\, talks and student presentations\, helping audiences become familiar with Shichiri’s artistic language while exploring the interplay and potential of theater and film in contemporary art. \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2504080220521166502761?utm_campaign=accu_theme&utm_medium=home_north&utm_source=Web \n場次一 Session 1｜5/23（五 Fri）19:00 – 21:00\n七里圭經典作品放映《清掃的女子 亡靈》 Kei Shichiri’s Classic Screening: The Cleaning Lady – Spectre ※海外首映 Overseas Premiere \n📍地點 Venue｜VA HUB（https://g.co/kgs/PQvvz9U） \n19:00-20:30 導演開場、經典作品《清掃的女子 亡靈》放映 Opening and Screening\n20:30-21:00 映後導演QA時間 Post-screening Director Q&A \n七里圭，是一位獨特的電影導演，以其從劇情長片、紀錄片到實驗電影等廣泛領域的跨足，及個人風格創作的持續發表而知名。 此外，尚有部短片是為這部作品的試作《The cleaning lady after 100 years : Spectre》。 \nKei Shichiri is a distinctive filmmaker known for his works spanning narrative films\, documentaries and experimental cinema. His collaborations with electronic musicians and performance artists have led to stage performances and recent explorations in cutting-edge media technologies. The Cleaning Lady – Spectre\, premiering overseas for the first time in Taipei\, is a re-creation of his 2019 experimental stage piece. Using AI extraction techniques and multiple camera perspectives\, the work reinterprets performance and delves into posthuman concerns shaped by the COVID-19 era. A short prototype film\, The Cleaning Lady After 100 Years: Spectre\, also precedes the main work. \n \n《清掃的女子 亡靈》（點此看參考預告 Watch Trailer）\n片名原文：『清掃する女　亡霊 』，2023年，片長74分鐘，中文字幕／謝淳清 The Cleaning Lady – Spectre (2023\, 74 min\, Chinese subtitles) \n演出者 Performers：安藤朋子、黒田育世\n歌唱・音樂 Music：さとうじゅんこ\n導演・剪輯 Director/Editor：七里圭\n編劇 Writers：新柵未成、七里圭\n撮影 Cinematographers：高橋哲也、村上拓也\nCG特效工程師 CG Engineer：早川翔人\n聲音設計 Sound Design：松野泉\n混音 Mixing：池田拓実\n音樂提供 Music：檜垣智也 \n場次二 Session 2｜5/24（六 Sat）18:30 – 21:30\n講座放映 Lecture-Screening：關於電影的再創作——以作品《Music as film》為例 Re-creating Film – Case Study: Music as film \n📍地點 Venue｜牯嶺街小劇場二樓藝文空間 Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre（https://g.co/kgs/nd2HrSy） \n18:30-19:30 經典作品《Music as film》放映 Screening – Music as film\n19:30-21:30 講座：關於電影的再創作（含30分鐘QA，講者：七里圭、口譯與解說：謝淳清） Lecture: Re-Creating Film (with 30-min Q&A) \n關於電影的再創作（シネマの再創造について） \n電影，在19世紀末被發明之初，是項運用當時最尖端的技術 — 膠卷和放映機 — 所上演的最新舞台表現。 此外，將介紹其最新作《Music as film with Digital Heads》。 \nCinema\, since its 19th-century invention\, was a performance of advanced technologies—film and projection. In early days\, it was also a medium of physical performance\, involving live narration and accompaniment. \nWith this view\, Shichiri examines digital-age cinema’s possibilities. Collaborating with musicians and performance artists\, he continuously evolves and mutates his works. This session features a screening of Music as film\, a foundational piece\, followed by a discussion of his latest project\, Music as film with Digital Heads\, inspired by silent-era benshi narration and reimagined through 21st-century digital technology. \nThis lecture not only discusses cinematic expression but also critically examines how digitization transforms art and culture. \n《Music as film》（點此看參考預告 Watch Trailer）\n2014年，片長56分鐘，中文字幕/謝淳清 Music as film (2014\, 56 min\, Chinese subtitles) \n音樂演出 Music by：さとうじゅん、Cal Lyall、James Hadfield、Miya、徳久ウィリアム、sei、山崎阿弥、山形育弘、今藤哲平、長宗我部陽子、飴屋法水、多井智紀等\n英文文本 Text：Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas“Salome”\n導演 Director：七里圭\n音樂・錄音 Music/Sound：池田拓実\n錄音助理 Recording Assistant：西村直晃 \n場次三 Session 3｜5/25（日 Sun）10:30-13:00、14:30-17:30\n劇場與影像的雙面性：創作實驗 / 風景與自畫像 The Duality of Theater and Film: Creative Experiments / Landscapes and Self-Portraits\n—— 雅努斯成員作品放映暨對談、階段性創作發表 – JANUS Members’ Screenings and Discussions \n📍地點 Venue｜牯嶺街小劇場二樓藝文空間 Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre\n🔹本場次為一日通票，持有票卷者可參與本場次所有活動，請憑證進出。 All-day pass required for entry to all sessions. \nThis sharing session presents phase-one works themed around “self-portrait” and “landscape”\, reflecting explorations of self and environment through interdisciplinary collaboration.
