The Brio Wind Band will present its end-of-semester concert\, “Dawn Overture”\, on Sunday\, December 14 at 14:00 in Sport Hall I\, 1/F. Doors will open at 13:30. All faculty and students are warmly invited to enter the world of live music at the close of the year and experience its healing warmth. \nThe concert will be conducted by Mr. Lin Che-Wei. The program spans classical\, contemporary\, and ensemble pieces\, showcasing a rich palette of tones and interpretations. Repertoire includes Memories of Friendship\, Titanic – Medley\, Fate of the Gods\, a French horn ensemble performance of Jupiter\, a saxophone ensemble performance of Canon\, a brass quintet performance of Jounetsu Tairiku\, as well as Holiday of Hope\, The Seventh Night of July\, and Hana wa Saku. Since forming the experimental band Ground Zero in the 1990s\, Otomo has been a leading name in Japan’s experimental music scene. Beyond his work as an improvisational guitarist\, he introduced turntablism into experimental music\, using samples ranging from jazz to model operas from Cultural Revolution era. \nHis creations span jazz\, rock\, free improvisation\, and noise music. After Ground Zero disbanded in 1998\, its members became internationally recognized figures in free improvisation\, now residing across Germany and Japan. Later\, Otomo formed ONJQ (Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Quintet). In recent years\, he published his autobiography The Music Era I Grew Up In and has also ventured into film and TV scoring\, including for morning drama Amachan\, A Long Goodbye\, and VIVANT\, among others. Throughout his career\, Otomo has collaborated with countless legendary jazz and improvisational musicians worldwide. Their music features ferocious guitar noise and cosmic synthesizer sounds\, taking audiences on an intense sonic journey. Known for their long-form performances with a strong ritualistic feel\, their shows culminate in a climactic guitar meltdown that feels almost magical. \nIn 2025\, they released their fourth vinyl album Children in the Darkness under a European label\, shaking the international psychedelic scene with their blend of psychedelia and noise. They have also opened for numerous major psychedelic acts overseas. Dedicated to promoting Taiwanese psychedelic rock culture\, Dope Purple organizes the Taipei Psych Rock Festival and is recognized as a leading force in Taiwan’s heavy psych rock scene. \n小劉 Xiao Liu \n退伍偶然接觸到前衛爵士後開始自學薩克斯風，於2015年1月初次公開演出。曾參與台中實驗搖滾樂團“龍頭”、“龍尾”和自由即興樂團“PA66”、“神仙老虎狗”。\n同時以個人名義「小劉」與國內外自由即興樂手交流演出。 \nXiao Liu began his self-taught saxophone journey once after having the access to the avant-garde jazz\, when stumbling upon it after his military service.  He made his first public performance in January 2015. He is a member of the experimental rock band “Tapdragon” and “Serpentine” based in Taichung \, and also plays in improv band “PA66” and “神仙老虎狗”.\nHe uses the name “Xiao Liu” as a solo artist to perform with various local and international improvisation musicians.

The entire performance was led by conductor Zhang Jiayun \, who is known for her sharp sense of rhythm and dramatic control. She is good at extracting and advancing the multi-part interweaving of percussion and national music\, pushing the audio-visual tension to the limit and leading the audience into the flow of music. \nThe program was full of excitement. The grand opening of “Zhuolu Fantasy” presented an epic duel on an ancient battlefield; “White Snake Fantasy” blended legendary stories and depicted love\, sorrow and joy with percussion colors; “Drama. Song. Zen” integrated theatrical body movements with the dialogue between Eastern and Western sounds\, showing the tension of cooperative competition and the flow of Zen in interaction and resonance; in the second half\, Lin Yanxing\, a young musician of Taiwan’s national music star project\, was invited to perform “String Songs on the Frontier” composed by Li Binyang\, which was based on Du Fu’s poem “The March of the Chariots” and outlined the customs and people of the frontier. He later moved to Shanghai\, where he performed and taught for three years\, including at prestigious Shanghai International Jazz Festival (twice). \nHe was a regular performer at JZ Club\, Ritz-Carlton’s Auro Jazz Lounge\, and collaborated with classical symphony orchestras and in studio productions. PG was twice invited to perform with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra\, once under the baton of Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat. \nIn 2019\, PG moved to Boston\, performing at famed jazz bars such as Lilypad and Regatta Bar. In 2021\, he recorded his personal jazz album in the U.S. and returned to Taiwan later that year to continue his music journey.

Through this musical celebration\, the festival aims to share messages of hope and beauty via the universal language of music. \nThe festival will run from May 30 to June 8\, 2025\, featuring a series of events including five large-scale outdoor concerts at Taoyuan Arts Plaza and one indoor ticketed concert at Taoyuan Exhibition Center Performance Hall. \nA highlight of the international lineup includes the first-ever Taiwan performance by the world-renowned Hiroshima Wind Orchestra\, conducted by acclaimed Japanese maestro Tatsuya Shimono. Since founding Taiwan Connection (TC) in 2004\, where he serves as Artistic Director\, Hu has dedicated himself to leading Taiwan’s young musicians in bringing classical music’s enduring beauty to audiences far and wide. \nFor his third appearance at the Eslite Chamber Music Festival\, Hu collaborates with outstanding young international musicians: violinist Xuan-Hao Hsu\, a Curtis Institute of Music graduate with an extensive touring history in Europe and the Americas; violist Shih-Hsien Tsai\, principal violist of the Ciconia Consort in The Hague\, Netherlands; and cellist Shih-Lin Chen\, former member of Canada’s Borealis String Quartet and a prominent mid-career artist in Taiwan. DESCRIPTION:跟著時光機，走入管風琴音樂最輝煌的巴洛克年代 Follow the time machine and enter the Baroque era\, the most glorious era of organ music \n巴洛克時期是管風琴音樂最為輝煌的年代，宛如樂器中的皇室，它的音色曾在教堂裡回蕩，為無數世人帶來感動與靈魂的洗滌。這場音樂會將從這段偉大的時期開始，帶領聽眾回到17至18世紀，揭開管風琴如何成為「樂器之王」的故事。 \n本次演出力邀林暐倫、何忠謀雙小號陣容強強聯手，與管風琴家余曉怡老師展開音樂之間的精彩對話，觀衆將透過管風琴音樂的萬種風情，重溫巴洛克時期的輝煌，進一步感受到「樂器之王」的宏偉。 \nThe Baroque period was the most glorious era for organ music. Like a royal instrument\, its sound once reverberated in churches\, moving and cleansing the souls of countless people. This concert will begin from this great period\, taking the audience back to the 17th and 18th centuries and revealing the story of how the organ became the “king of musical instruments”. \nThis performance invites Lin Weilun and He Zhongmou to join forces on trumpet to engage in a wonderful musical dialogue with organist Yu Xiaoyi. This work showcases the performer’s skills with magnificent touches\, unfolding a delicate interweaving of melody and harmony. Its complex form structure and strong musical emotions make it a symbol of Baroque music and an irreplaceable treasure in the organ repertoire. \nThe next performance will further showcase another side of the Baroque period – the concerto dialogue between brass instruments and keyboard instruments. \nGiovanni Battista Franceschini’s Sonata in D major features double trumpets and the organ\, creating a light and gorgeous timbre. The bright melody of the trumpet is like sunlight penetrating through stained glass\, while the organ is laid out with rich harmonies\, like the solemn celestial echoes in the church. This work not only presents the brilliance of music\, but also captures the luxury and agility of Baroque music. \nNext\, Giuseppe Jacchini’s Sonata for Double Trumpet and Organ will continue to lead the audience to explore the interactive spirit in Baroque music. This work features a bright dialogue between two trumpets\, which echo each other and interweave beautiful melodic lines. The organ provides heavy and warm harmonic support in this dialogue\, like a stable foundation in the church. This piece of music captures the joyful atmosphere of the ceremony at that time with a light yet solemn rhythm\, showing the joy and elegance in Baroque music. \nIn addition to the Baroque classics\, this concert also features two contemporary American solo organ works. Through diverse arrangements and rich repertoire\, the audience will experience the diverse styles of organ music—from the beauty of a simple solo to the dialogue between double trumpets and the organ. As the notes flow through the space\, the brightness of the brass tubes and the grandeur of the organ blend with each other. We can not only relive the glory of the Baroque period\, but also read the story of the organ itself from these pieces of music.
