The Future of Collectible Design in Art Market
\nΔDesignArt 2025 is Taiwan’s first art fair platform centered on the perspectives of designers. It showcases a diverse range of works across various fields\, including crafts\, printing\, bookbinding\, speculative design\, floral art\, objects and experimental pieces. Utilizing the unique layout of hotel rooms\, the exhibition features 15 distinct thematic rooms under the framework of design art. ΔDesignArt aims to establish a database of emerging design artists\, seeking to incorporate different variables (Δ delta) to broaden our vision and understanding of creation. The goal is to present a collective image of Taiwan’s contemporary expressions with distinctive personal styles and to propel these emerging creators onto the international stage. \nWe believe that exhibitions concretely present curatorial viewpoints\, while forums stimulate focused discussions between viewers and speakers. These discussions\, in turn\, offer new insights when revisiting the curated content of ΔDesignArt. This year’s forum brings together scholars and experts from Taiwan\, Japan and Korea. Notably\, we have invited Kang Jae-young\, Korea’s leading contemporary craft curator\, to Taiwan. He will engage in a dialogue with Hsieh Hsin-Han\, founder of Soil and Seed\, who represented Taiwan at the KCDF and is also part of ΔDesignArt exhibition lineup. They will share the latest trends in the contemporary craft markets of Taiwan and Korea. From Japan\, the innovative experience design team Konel\, known for their impressive showcases at Milan Design Week and the Osaka Expo\, will not only exhibit their work in Taiwan but also share insights into the latest Japanese technologies and design integrations. \nBuilding on the enthusiastic response to last year’s lecture focusing on Collectible Design\, this year’s forum will delve deeper into the future market potential of this trend. We have invited Zoey Yeh\, Creative Application Integration Manager at Yu-Hsiu Museum of Art; Sid Chen\, Chairman of AICA Taiwan; and Emerson Wang\, Artistic Director of Taoyuan Convention and Exhibition Center\, for a panel discussion. Through sharing experiences of integrating art and design in museums\, we aim to explore market potential and\, from an artistic perspective\, glimpse new trends of design within the art market. \nFurthermore\, this year’s exhibition extends beyond the venue\, collaborating with the adjacent Young Designers’ Exhibition. Under the theme of Nangang Design Art Week\, a special lecture will be held\, featuring Yan Bo-Jun\, founder of Three Pages Design; Gu Guang-Yi\, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Applied Arts\, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University; and Zeng Xi-Kai\, Assistant Professor at Department of Industrial Design\, Shih Chien University. They will focus on the artistic creative styles observed in student graduation projects. The Future of Collectible Design in Art Market \nCollectible Design風潮從歐美吹起，10年前席捲日本東京，至今許多網路媒體與相關藝術拍賣平台都開始討論，國外亦有「Design Gallery」或「Design Miami」、「Salone del Mobile Milano」、比利時「Collectible」、「DESIGNART TOKYO」等展會，這股熱潮終於也吹向台灣，在台灣當代藝術市場非常蓬勃的當下，如何從當代藝術觀點回望這股從設計興起的創作熱潮？ \nThe trend of Collectible Design originated in Europe and America\, swept through Tokyo a decade ago\, and has since become a topic of discussion across various online media and art auction platforms. Internationally\, exhibitions like “Design Gallery”\, “Design Miami”\, “Salone del Mobile Milano”\, Belgium’s “Collectible” and “DESIGNART TOKYO” have embraced this movement. Now\, this wave has reached Taiwan. Given the vibrancy of Taiwan’s contemporary art market\, how can we\, from the perspective of contemporary art\, reflect on this design-driven creative trend? Is there room in the art market to accommodate such works? \nResponsible for product selection planning and creator exhibition planning in the museum shop. For three years\, artists received minimal support\, and the cultural industry fell into an unprecedented crisis. This hardship echoes the time of Black Death in Europe\, when society neared collapse and people turned to “masks” as a way to cope with plague and the anxiety of survival. \nIt was in this context that the Taiwan Mask Festival was born.Through the symbol of the mask\, Guang Lian Theatre seeks to rediscover the meaning of life and connect cultural spirits of the past\, present and future. \n戴上面具，也許我們才能更真實地看見自己 \nA mask is not just a cover—it is also a revelation. \nThroughout human history\, masks have never been mere decoration—they are vessels to the spiritual world. From ancient shamans’ rituals and religious ceremonies to theater and folk culture\, masks have always held a sacred and irreplaceable role. They symbolize identity and offer protection and empowerment to the wearer. \nIn modern society\, while masks may seem distant from our daily lives\, they are\, in fact\, deeply embedded in our existence. \nFrom professional roles to social class\, we constantly shift between identities. Whether as a father\, a teacher\, an artist or even a digital persona on social media—each is like a mask we wear\, navigating between reality and the virtual. But as we become accustomed to wearing these masks\, do we also start to fear the true “self”? \nThe mask is both a shield and a path of discovery. \nIn the performing arts\, masks help performers enter character swiftly\, overcome inner barriers and express themselves more freely. On a psychological level\, masks serve as tools that allow people to uncover aspects of themselves they were previously unaware of\, sometimes even facilitating healing and reconnecting with their inner worlds. \nWe are stepping into an era where the virtual and the real intertwine. \nDigital identities in the metaverse and curated images on social media are today’s “masks”. As we shape ourselves through technology\, can we still truly know who we are? \nThe creation of Taiwan Mask Festival is not only a tribute to traditional culture—it is also a question posed to the future world. \nThrough this artistic celebration\, we hope to inspire people to reconsider the meaning of “masks”. They are not merely relics of the past but vital keys to self-exploration in the future. \nBy putting on a mask\, perhaps we can finally see ourselves more clearly.
