Program X-site 2025: The Pore Landscape Project
\nAbout Program X-site \nBased on the outdoor plaza of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM)\, Program X-site (2014 –) launches an annual open call for experimental temporary installation projects. From multiple perspectives\, such as architectural construction\, contemporary art\, environmental research and public participation\, the event encourages interdisciplinary and publicly engaged projects that emphasize innovative experimentation. Meanwhile\, it inspires the public to imagine and explore the issues related to public space\, urban environment and human development. Over the years\, Program X-site has supported various pioneering projects proposed by cutting-edge teams in architecture and art\, establishing itself as an important incubator of openness and experimentation for young and mid-career generations in Taiwan. \nThe Pore Landscape Project\, conceived by the interdisciplinary team Studio Superficial\, was selected as the 12th laureate in 2025. \nAbout The Pore Landscape Project  \nTaipei is the city most severely affected by the urban heat island effect in Taiwan\, and rising temperatures have gradually reshaped the way people interact with public plazas. Simulating the heat dissipation mechanism of pores\, Studio Superficial has conceived an installation consisting of hundreds of “porous” devices made from recycled aluminum\, symbolically occupying the TFAM outdoor plaza. Embedded into the public space like a breathing carpet with pores\, the installation has initiated a landscape experiment exploring the relationship between people and their surroundings. Constructed from tangible objects and intangible mist\, the installation integrates the concept of microclimate landscape design to regulate light and shadow\, wind direction\, humidity and temperature. It attempts to alleviate the stationary heat on-site while awakening the public’s bodily perception\, ultimately redefining the interaction between the plaza and its visitors. \nVisiting reminder \n1. Jun T. LAI: A Retrospective
\n“Jun T. Lai: A Retrospective”\, curated by art critic Chang Ching-Wen\, symbolizes the pure yet profound and versatile yet consistent attributes of the artist’s work. Jun T. Lai (b. 1953) was inspired by Liao Chi-Chun during her college years and began to explore colors as a means of expression. While studying in Japan\, she formulated the core concepts for her later spatial works. \nIn the 1980s\, she delved into the potential of painting through abstract arrangements of pure colors\, earning recognition in major competition exhibitions\, including the Contemporary Art Trends R.O.C. Subsequently\, she established the Studio of Contemporary Art (SOCA) to advocate for avant-garde art. In the 1990s\, she revisited Eastern aesthetics\, which led to new insights that inspired her to draw from nature and her inner feelings through her sensibility. Following 2007\, she focused on living and creating art on Taiwan’s eastern coast\, redirecting her attention to the independent expression of colors while expressing a profound desire for nature. \nThis exhibition will explore the artist’s creative journey through four themes spanning from the 1970s to the present. It will feature nearly one hundred exhibits\, including oil\, acrylic\, and mixed media paintings\, as well as sculptures\, installations\, hand drawings\, manuscripts\, videos\, and archives.

The Luminous Paradise of Chang Li-Yeh
\nEthereal Bloom – The Luminous Paradise of Chang Li-Yeh presents a radiant world where blossoms shimmer in divine light and fantastical creatures roam under deep blue skies. Inspired by his painting Blossoming Tree\, this exhibition captures the sacred beauty and fleeting sorrow of life at its most vibrant. \nFeaturing works from the past decade\, including the series Butterfly Man\, Fairy Tale Paradise\, Animism and Aura\, the show traces Chang’s journey from whimsical dreamscapes to spiritual utopias. Alongside these are his early newspaper per illustrations and expressive series like Self-Portrait and Social Outcast\, revealing a transformation from raw\, intuitive forms to intricate\, symbolic compositions. \nCurated by Huang Chih-Wei\, the exhibition explores the idea of “ephemeral dreams”—moments that sparkle and vanish like morning dew. In worlds filled with playful monsters\, sacred animals\, and floating blossoms\, time stretches and folds. Ethereal Bloom invites visitors to wander through Chang’s luminous landscapes and glimpse the artist’s innermost visions of joy\, loss and renewal. \nChang Li-Yeh was born in Chiayi. He graduated from the Department of Sociology at Soochow University in Taiwan. In his youth\, he developed a love for reading and writing literature and poetry. Like many budding artists\, he enjoyed doodling and habitually filled every blank space in his textbooks\, which ultimately became an indelible “bad habit”. This tendency shaped his subconscious\, leading to the brimming\, compact imagery found in his paintings today. Perhaps it is precisely this “bad habit” that contributes to the unique characteristics of his work. \nChang’s early works centered on social issues\, portraying the struggles of marginalized communities. His Betel Nut Beauty series explored the objectification of young women in Taiwan’s industrial cities\, while Landslide reflected on climate change and ecological destruction. These works captured the raw\, often surreal contradictions of human nature and politics. \nIn recent years\, his focus has turned inward\, exploring the subconscious. He reimagines the body and soul as a microcosm of emotions\, memories\, and desires. His figures morph and flow\, their limbs entwined with mountains\, rivers\, and blooming landscapes—an intimate fusion of self and nature. In the Butterfly Man series\, he reflects on love\, longing and memory\, while the Small Universe series builds a connection between the body and the natural world\, creating a sanctuary where every tree\, stream\, and peak resonates with harmony.\n\n仙樹，2020，162 X 226cm，油彩、畫布 \n\n蝴蝶人-5，2014，112 X 145cm，壓克力、麥克筆、畫布 \n\n萬物有靈，2016，45 X 45cm，壓克力、畫布

SUMMARY:行者十步 Footprints of the Walker：蔡明亮 Tsai Ming-Liang
\nThe Walker is more than a pilgrim through time and space\, it’s the transformation of imagery. \nIn 2011\, while rehearsing the stage play Only You\, in the monologue The Fish of Lee Kang-sheng: The Journey in the Desert\, Lee walked at an extremely slow pace for just a few meters. He shifts between the roles of Tsai Ming-liang’s father and the Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang. This movement profoundly affected Tsai. These steps both suspended and advanced the forward motion. It encapsulated the essence of the decades-long collaboration between Tsai and Lee. It also planted the seed for the open form of cinema Tsai has been nurturing. \nIf Lee’s slow walk is the crystallization of his years of collaboration with Tsai\, then The Walker series\, which they completed between 2012 and 2024\, can be seen as a grand artistic journey across disciplines\, realized through Lee ’s embodiment of a red-robed monk in slow\, deliberate motion. \nThis series includes ten films of varying lengths—No Form\, Walker\, Sleepwalk\, Diamond Sutra\, Walking on Water\, Journey to the West\, No No Sleep\, Sand\, Where\, and Abiding Nowhere—as well as the stage play The Monk from Tang Dynasty. Additionally\, it extends into cinematic exhibitions such as No No Sleep at MoNTUE －Tsai Ming-Liang Solo Exhibition\, Walker\, Tsai Ming-Liang at the Zhuangwei Dune Visitor Center and A Quest at the Centre Pompidou. Together\, they explore the fusion of film and space. \nFootprints of the Walker: Tsai Ming-Liang refers to the ten films\, pointing to this body of work inspired by the 17-year-long journey of Xuanzang in search of sutras from India. Over the past decade\, The Walker series has set foot not only in Taipei\, Yunlin\, and Yilan but also Hong Kong\, Kuching\, and Tokyo\, and extended as far as Marseille\, Paris and Washington D.C. Through long takes\, the films depict the monk’s journey outward from Taipei in meditative movement—from the inner self to the broader world. \nWithin the gallery space\, these films do not exist independently but interconnect to form an organic whole. Presented alongside paper\, sutras\, mirrors\, chairs\, sketches\, paintings\, objects\, and archival materials\, an immersive visual environment is created through multi-screen installations and video art. Light and shadow\, color and texture\, missed encounters and fateful meetings\, life and illusion\, the finite and the infinite—these elements weave together to shape the unique world of the Walker. \nFootprints of the Walker: Tsai Ming-Liang symbolizes the artistic transformation of Tsai as a director\, opening up a new cinematic pilgrimage. Imagine the ancient monk from Chang’an who\, defying the imperial decree\, set out resolutely on his westward journey in search of the Dharma. Similarly\, Tsai uses film as his scripture\, moving between cinema\, theater and exhibition spaces\, continuously  searching beyond spatial\, media\, and artistic boundaries—to carve out a Walker’s path that gazes upon time itself.

This hardship echoes the time of Black Death in Europe\, when society neared collapse and people turned to “masks” as a way to cope with plague and the anxiety of survival. \nIt was in this context that the Taiwan Mask Festival was born.Through the symbol of the mask\, Guang Lian Theatre seeks to rediscover the meaning of life and connect cultural spirits of the past\, present and future. \n戴上面具，也許我們才能更真實地看見自己 \nA mask is not just a cover—it is also a revelation. \nThroughout human history\, masks have never been mere decoration—they are vessels to the spiritual world. From ancient shamans’ rituals and religious ceremonies to theater and folk culture\, masks have always held a sacred and irreplaceable role. They symbolize identity and offer protection and empowerment to the wearer. \nIn modern society\, while masks may seem distant from our daily lives\, they are\, in fact\, deeply embedded in our existence. \nFrom professional roles to social class\, we constantly shift between identities. Whether as a father\, a teacher\, an artist or even a digital persona on social media—each is like a mask we wear\, navigating between reality and the virtual. But as we become accustomed to wearing these masks\, do we also start to fear the true “self”? \nThe mask is both a shield and a path of discovery. \nIn the performing arts\, masks help performers enter character swiftly\, overcome inner barriers and express themselves more freely. On a psychological level\, masks serve as tools that allow people to uncover aspects of themselves they were previously unaware of\, sometimes even facilitating healing and reconnecting with their inner worlds. \nWe are stepping into an era where the virtual and the real intertwine. \nDigital identities in the metaverse and curated images on social media are today’s “masks”. As we shape ourselves through technology\, can we still truly know who we are? \nThe creation of Taiwan Mask Festival is not only a tribute to traditional culture—it is also a question posed to the future world. \nThrough this artistic celebration\, we hope to inspire people to reconsider the meaning of “masks”. They are not merely relics of the past but vital keys to self-exploration in the future. \nBy putting on a mask\, perhaps we can finally see ourselves more clearly.

Taiwan-Japan Interdisciplinary Theater and Film Co-Creation Experiment
What is JANUS Project? \n“Janus” is the Roman god of beginnings and transitions\, depicted with two faces to symbolize looking to the past and the future. Inspired by this concept\, the JANUS Project explores the boundaries between theater and film\, igniting a creative and reflective dialogue. \nCurated by Kai Liao (Artistic Director of Fantasy Theatre) and experimental film researcher Chun-Ching Hsieh\, the JANUS Project invites renowned Japanese director and media artist Kei Shichiri to participate. Centered around “Theater × Film × Personal Narrative”\, this interdisciplinary experiment connects past and future\, inner and outer worlds\, and reality and dreams. \nFantasy Theatre hopes to rekindle its founding spirit—light and fantasy—through this collaboration. By weaving together Shichiri’s distinctive language of Expanded Cinema and theatrical expression\, the project seeks new ways to question the world and the self. \nIn 2024\, the project features eight workshops around six core themes: dreams\, media\, memory\, history\, landscape and transformation. These workshops focus on the intersection of theater and film media as well as the perception and narration of self. Participants engage in thematic lectures\, collaborative discussions and creative exercises guided by Chun-Ching Hsieh. They also exchange ideas with Taiwanese and Japanese creators\, study Kei Shichiri’s artistic philosophies and techniques\, and draw inspiration from Fantasy Theatre’s foundational themes to create personal or collective works across literary\, historical and contemporary contexts. \nThe program includes screenings\, talks and student presentations\, helping audiences become familiar with Shichiri’s artistic language while exploring the interplay and potential of theater and film in contemporary art. \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2504080220521166502761?utm_campaign=accu_theme&utm_medium=home_north&utm_source=Web \n場次一 Session 1｜5/23（五 Fri）19:00 – 21:00\n七里圭經典作品放映《清掃的女子 亡靈》 Kei Shichiri’s Classic Screening: The Cleaning Lady – Spectre ※海外首映 Overseas Premiere \n📍地點 Venue｜VA HUB（https://g.co/kgs/PQvvz9U） \n19:00-20:30 導演開場、經典作品《清掃的女子 亡靈》放映 Opening and Screening\n20:30-21:00 映後導演QA時間 Post-screening Director Q&A \n七里圭，是一位獨特的電影導演，以其從劇情長片、紀錄片到實驗電影等廣泛領域的跨足，及個人風格創作的持續發表而知名。 此外，尚有部短片是為這部作品的試作《The cleaning lady after 100 years : Spectre》。 \nKei Shichiri is a distinctive filmmaker known for his works spanning narrative films\, documentaries and experimental cinema. His collaborations with electronic musicians and performance artists have led to stage performances and recent explorations in cutting-edge media technologies. The Cleaning Lady – Spectre\, premiering overseas for the first time in Taipei\, is a re-creation of his 2019 experimental stage piece. Using AI extraction techniques and multiple camera perspectives\, the work reinterprets performance and delves into posthuman concerns shaped by the COVID-19 era. A short prototype film\, The Cleaning Lady After 100 Years: Spectre\, also precedes the main work. \n \n《清掃的女子 亡靈》（點此看參考預告 Watch Trailer）\n片名原文：『清掃する女　亡霊 』，2023年，片長74分鐘，中文字幕／謝淳清 The Cleaning Lady – Spectre (2023\, 74 min\, Chinese subtitles) \n演出者 Performers：安藤朋子、黒田育世\n歌唱・音樂 Music：さとうじゅんこ\n導演・剪輯 Director/Editor：七里圭\n編劇 Writers：新柵未成、七里圭\n撮影 Cinematographers：高橋哲也、村上拓也\nCG特效工程師 CG Engineer：早川翔人\n聲音設計 Sound Design：松野泉\n混音 Mixing：池田拓実\n音樂提供 Music：檜垣智也 \n場次二 Session 2｜5/24（六 Sat）18:30 – 21:30\n講座放映 Lecture-Screening：關於電影的再創作——以作品《Music as film》為例 Re-creating Film – Case Study: Music as film \n📍地點 Venue｜牯嶺街小劇場二樓藝文空間 Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre（https://g.co/kgs/nd2HrSy） \n18:30-19:30 經典作品《Music as film》放映 Screening – Music as film\n19:30-21:30 講座：關於電影的再創作（含30分鐘QA，講者：七里圭、口譯與解說：謝淳清） Lecture: Re-Creating Film (with 30-min Q&A) \n關於電影的再創作（シネマの再創造について） \n電影，在19世紀末被發明之初，是項運用當時最尖端的技術 — 膠卷和放映機 — 所上演的最新舞台表現。 此外，將介紹其最新作《Music as film with Digital Heads》。 \nCinema\, since its 19th-century invention\, was a performance of advanced technologies—film and projection. In early days\, it was also a medium of physical performance\, involving live narration and accompaniment. \nWith this view\, Shichiri examines digital-age cinema’s possibilities. Collaborating with musicians and performance artists\, he continuously evolves and mutates his works. This session features a screening of Music as film\, a foundational piece\, followed by a discussion of his latest project\, Music as film with Digital Heads\, inspired by silent-era benshi narration and reimagined through 21st-century digital technology. \nThis lecture not only discusses cinematic expression but also critically examines how digitization transforms art and culture. \n《Music as film》（點此看參考預告 Watch Trailer）\n2014年，片長56分鐘，中文字幕/謝淳清 Music as film (2014\, 56 min\, Chinese subtitles) \n音樂演出 Music by：さとうじゅん、Cal Lyall、James Hadfield、Miya、徳久ウィリアム、sei、山崎阿弥、山形育弘、今藤哲平、長宗我部陽子、飴屋法水、多井智紀等\n英文文本 Text：Lord Alfred Bruce Douglas“Salome”\n導演 Director：七里圭\n音樂・錄音 Music/Sound：池田拓実\n錄音助理 Recording Assistant：西村直晃 \n場次三 Session 3｜5/25（日 Sun）10:30-13:00、14:30-17:30\n劇場與影像的雙面性：創作實驗 / 風景與自畫像 The Duality of Theater and Film: Creative Experiments / Landscapes and Self-Portraits\n—— 雅努斯成員作品放映暨對談、階段性創作發表 – JANUS Members’ Screenings and Discussions \n📍地點 Venue｜牯嶺街小劇場二樓藝文空間 Guling Street Avant-garde Theatre\n🔹本場次為一日通票，持有票卷者可參與本場次所有活動，請憑證進出。 All-day pass required for entry to all sessions. \nThis sharing session presents phase-one works themed around “self-portrait” and “landscape”\, reflecting explorations of self and environment through interdisciplinary collaboration. SUMMARY:Reflection：想法的實相世界 The Reality of Thought｜七人聯展 Seven-Person Group Exhibition
\n昔日的夢想 化為現實 生活著 \n\n\n現實 化為昔日的夢想 生活著 \n—希望之路，p.74 \n“Reflection” signifies the return and projection of energy. It can refer to a mirrored image\, an expression\, or a deep\, deliberate contemplation. There exists a dynamic interplay between the external world and an individual’s inner thoughts. What we see and hear shapes what we think and how we act; conversely\, our actions and words often reveal our inner world. Just as a face is reflected in water\, so a person’s heart reflects the person. (Proverbs 27:19) \nTo live is to think and feel. As we journey through life\, we face waves of anxiety\, frustration and disappointment. Yet after the storm\, we also experience calm\, joy\, accomplishment and a sense of peace. Along this path\, artistic creation becomes the fruit of careful thought—manifesting chosen themes and stylistic expressions. Whether through abstract brushstrokes and color blocks\, figurative portraits and objects\, flowing images\, or hand-drawn lines\, these works are a reflection of constant self-exploration amidst life’s challenges and the persistent pursuit of growth and elevation through everyday reflection. \nThe world’s political and economic climate parallels the challenges of individual and family life. Just as the world influences people\, so too can people influence the world. Everything has its order\, and that order is from God. As we dedicate ourselves with sincerity and effort\, God blesses us in return. Our actions shape what we receive. Reflection is not only the reality of thoughts\, but also the assurance of faith in life. May this exhibition allow you to experience a reflection of God’s love\, the stirring of the Holy Spirit\, and the peace of the Son\, Jesus. \nYesterday’s dreams have become today’s reality—alive in life.Today’s reality becomes yesterday’s dreams—alive in life.—from The Road of Hope\, p.74 \n開放時間 Opening Hours：週二–週日 Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 – 17:00（週一、端午節休館 Closed on Mondays and Dragon Boat Festival）展期最末日開放至14:00 Open until 14:00 on the final day \n費用 Fee：免費 Free

Diotima Quartet
DESCRIPTION:法國當代室內樂權威 \n巴黎FNAPEC大賽首獎 \n光影交織 共譜印象色彩 \n跨世代突破與融合 開創全新視野 \nThe Authority on Contemporary French Chamber Music \nFirst Prize at the Paris FNAPEC Competition \nWeaving Light and Shadow\, Painting with Sonic Colors \nA New Vision Through Cross-Generational Fusion \n \nDiotima是全球最受矚目的法國弦樂四重奏團之一，曾獲巴黎FNAPEC大賽首獎及倫敦弦樂四重奏大賽當代作品演奏首獎。 \nDiotima Quartet\, one of the world’s most renowned French string quartets\, has earned accolades including the First Prize at the Paris FNAPEC Competition and the Contemporary Music Award at the London String Quartet Competition. Celebrated for their interpretations of 20th-century and contemporary music\, they also excel in classical and romantic repertoire. Known for their precise technique and profound understanding of musical textures\, they seamlessly connect traditional and modern musical languages\, creating a dialogue that transcends time. Their recordings\, including the complete Bartók String Quartets and Boulez’s Livre pour Quatuor\, showcase their deep engagement with 20th-century quartet music. \nPerforming globally\, Diotima will visit Taiwan this May to present a program featuring British composer Benjamin Britten’s early chamber work\, String Quartet No. 1 in D Major. This piece begins with a slow and mysterious melody\, achieving a balance between tranquil atmospheres and dynamic rhythmic drive. Additionally\, they will perform the Asian premiere of Austrian-German composer Anton Bruckner’s String Quartet in c minor\, WAB 111. This work reveals Bruckner’s potential in chamber music\, adhering to classical structures while showcasing his understanding of traditional forms. \nIn the second half\, the program highlights Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major\, the only quartet composed by the impressionist master. This piece offers a kaleidoscope of color and mood\, alternating between mystery and intensity. \nThe School of Communication’s Class of 2021 Joint Graduation Exhibition\, titled “Dreammayfly”\, will take place from May 30 to June 1 at Bopiliao Historic Block in Wanhua\, Taipei (Performance Hall\, No. 153–155\, Guangzhou Street\, Wanhua Dist.\, Taipei City). This exhibition brings together students from four departments within School of Communication: RTV\, ADSM\, New Media and Communication Administration\, and Audiovisual Journalism and Social Media Communication. It marks the first joint graduation exhibition under School of Communication in eight years\, and the first since the departments began separate admissions in the 2014 academic year. \nThe theme “Dreammayfly” fuses the notions of “dream” and “mayfly”. A dream signifies a beginning\, while the mayfly symbolizes perseverance. Though each student may seem insignificant on their own\, when united\, their collective creativity becomes a powerful force capable of changing the world. The mayfly’s short lifespan is intense and vibrant—much like the passion and dedication communication students pour into their craft. Despite long nights of editing or countless rounds of brainstorming\, they persist with courage and resilience. \nThe exhibition features works in two main categories: Thesis and Multimedia. \nIn the Thesis category: \n\n\n“A Study on College Students’ Media Dependence and Digital Usage Patterns” explores students’ reliance on social platforms and the positive and negative effects shaped by their usage preferences. \n\n\n“Disaster Narratives and Audience Experience in Makoto Shinkai’s Animated Trilogy” examines how visual and auditory elements create emotional resonance and impact viewers’ thoughts and feelings. \n\n\nIn the Multimedia category: \n\n\nPodcast projects such as “Light Through the Cracks” delve into social issues from psychological and humanitarian perspectives\, incorporating stories from individuals\, experts and volunteers\, as well as relevant media and interviews to inspire listeners with real-life experiences. \n\n\n“Take Love With You” focuses on the power of accurate information and goodwill in modern society\, conveying the core belief that even small actions can lead to meaningful change. \n\n\nDocumentary: “Hands of Craft” highlights Taiwan’s traditional artisans. Through in-depth interviews and footage\, it portrays how handcraft professionals strive to preserve their art in a fast-paced world dominated by technology and automation\, while navigating the challenges of economic pressure. \nHorizontal short film: “Compass” tells a story of growth\, pressure and self-discovery. Combining live-action footage with 2D animation\, it presents a second-dimensional character as a guide\, leading viewers to uncover forgotten inner stories. \nThe exhibition also incorporates immersive experiences\, structured around three thematic stages: \n\n\n“The Egg｜Birth” \n\n\n“The Nymph｜Exploration” \n\n\n“The Imago｜Transformation” \n\n\nThese interactive designs offer a rich sensory journey that mirrors the evolution of each communication student. \nAll faculty\, students\, and media professionals are warmly invited to attend and step into the world of “Dreammayfly”—a shared journey of life\, creativity and storytelling.
