Ceramic Art by Catherine Kao
\nCeramic art is a perfect combination of culture\, art\, and science. With the extraordinary plasticity of clay\, the artist imitates the texture of leather through realistic techniques and her control over the quality of the clay. Her work reflects fashion in contemporary life\, adds to the diverse expressions of ceramic art\, and embodies the concept of “life as art”. \nLeather products actually are not eco-friendly\, because they are non-recyclable. By imitating used or discarded leather products\, the artist reminds viewers to ponder solutions to our overdraft of Earth’s resources. By way of “subtractive living”\, the artist encourages us to reflect on our own materialistic desires and choose a lifestyle that liberates the environment and our spirits. As archaeological objects and sentiments from humanity’s long history with ceramic fragments\, the artist documents human life in the present with ceramics to serve as witness to our time on this Earth.

He specializes in themes of life\, death and vitality. \nNotable achievements include: \n\n2013 Sony World Photography Awards (1st Prize\, Nature & Wildlife category) – the first Asian recipient.\nOther accolades such as the Akiyama Shotaro Memorial Award\, Nikkor Club Award and Epson Taiwan Prestige Award.\nHis exhibitions span prestigious venues like Jazz Photography Gallery\, CMP BLOCK and Hsinchu City Art Museum.\n\nKondo’s works have also appeared in public art installations\, including collaborations with interactive artist Hsin-Chien Huang at MRT Trade Center Station in Taipei and thematic projects for Hsinchu’s Neiwan Line Art Museum. \nA project spanning two years\, Gift captures portraits of over 200 elderly individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds across Taiwan. Kondo reflects on the wisdom\, innocence\, and life stories etched into their faces\, emphasizing how each expression\, wrinkle\, and feature resonates as a unique narrative and a divine “gift” of life. \nInspired by Kondo’s childhood summer visits to a coastal inn in southern Kyushu\, Memory explores the contrast between day and night at the sea. It captures the fear\, allure\, and hypnotic rhythm of the waves\, encapsulating the mysterious beauty and overwhelming power of nature.

Exploring Everyday Art in Traditional Markets
\nSenior students from the Department of Commercial Design at Ming Chuan University have immersed themselves in Yilan’s Nanbei Market\, capturing the everyday artistry found in its streets and alleys. Their semester-end exhibition\, “Yilan City Art Market”\, is now open and will run until February 15 at Yilan Story Museum\, First Exhibition Room (No. 426\, Sec. 2\, Zhongshan Rd.\, Yilan City). \nFour senior students—Zhu Yi-Huan\, Chen Wen-Hua\, Lin Ying-Zhe and Weng Zi-Xiu—hailing from Pingtung\, Tainan\, Taoyuan and Yilan\, drew inspiration from Yilan Nanguan Market. Through multiple field visits and observations\, they reinterpreted the unique essence of the market through books\, maps\, photography and multimedia creations. Their works vividly portray the human stories and cultural beauty of the market\, showcasing the fusion of art and daily life. \nAs a Yilan native\, student Weng Zi-Xiu shared her perspective:“In Taiwan\, traditional markets are more than just places of commerce—they carry social warmth and cultural memories. They offer one of the fastest ways to glimpse local life. Our exhibition explores the art within the market’s daily life—each vendor is an artist in their own way. From the arrangement of ingredients and humorous handwritten signs to the rhythmic banter with customers\, these everyday interactions embody unique charm and warmth.” \nOver the past year\, the student team interviewed vendors\, building close relationships with them while documenting their daily work and deep emotional ties to the market. They also filmed a documentary\, “Capturing the Moments of Yilan Nanguan Market”\, which will be screened from February 11 to 15 at Yilan Story Museum\, 2nd Floor Screening Room. Through insights into vendors’ daily lives and workspaces\, the documentary reveals the rich cultural tapestry of Yilan Nanguan Market—from the dedication of shop owners and historical stories to the heartwarming interactions between vendors and customers. This project captures the authentic emotions\, passion and deep-rooted connection between the people and their land.

Reflections on Our UX Design Careers & Industry
\nThe term “Retreat” here signifies a space for reflection and introspection. We aim to create a small\, intimate gathering where participants can take a step back and reassess their careers and the industry. \nThe UX industry has faced major setbacks recently\, especially in Europe and North America\, with mass layoffs and a challenging job market. This is an unprecedented shift for our generation of designers. As we navigate these uncertain times\, it’s an opportunity to re-evaluate our design practices—what hasn’t been done well? How can we adjust and grow as designers? \nDuring this retreat\, we will reflect on past events\, assess our growth and prepare for the industry’s revival when the time comes. \nBeyond talks and Q&A sessions\, we will conclude with a workshop to facilitate practical discussions that resonate with participants’ experiences—ensuring a productive and meaningful conversation. \nBack in 2021\, the UX industry was thriving—new methodologies were emerging\, salary increases were frequent\, and design teams were rapidly expanding. It was an era where imagination defined the future of design. Yet\, in just two years\, everything changed. \nNow is the time for introspection—to reflect on the unrealistic ideals we once held\, the naïveté of the industry\, and even our own overconfidence. Run! With Passion\, With Fear\, Towards Excellence》Howard \n在設計工作中，學習與進步並非止步於技術的提升，而是一場持續的學習探索旅程。 \nIn the design profession\, growth isn’t just about technical skills—it’s a lifelong journey of learning and exploration. But what exactly are we exploring? How do we find direction and ensure we are progressing in the right way? \nIn this talk\, Howard will share insights from his experience as a design mentor and practitioner\, discussing how to define and pursue meaningful growth in the design field. Who Should Attend? \n🔹 Concerned About the Job Market?\nIf you’re looking for an open\, practical discussion on the current state of the UX industry\, this event is for you. Your insights will enhance our collective reflection. \n🔹 Exploring Your Path in Design?\nIf you’re passionate about UX and seeking direction\, this retreat will help you understand upcoming challenges and opportunities. \nFounder of GU Design (Rotterdam\, Netherlands) \n\nFormer Senior Designer at Shell\nFormer Board Member at the Netherlands Interaction Design Association\nCo-host of Design Nomad\nFrequent speaker at UX Camp Europe\, UX Camp Amsterdam\, Taiwan Design Research Institute and Taiwan Interaction Design Association\nMaster’s in Strategic Product Design from TU Delft\, Netherlands\n\nHoward \nDesign Manager/ Consultant/ Mentor \n設計導師、團隊領導者、一位自學並國際遊牧的實踐者。 \n\nA self-taught\, internationally nomadic designer with a passion for embracing change\nDesign Manager at Phase\, a startup developing a revolutionary digital UI editor\nBackground in engineering\, service design\, project management and consulting\nExperience at IBM\, NEC and various startups\, working on SaaS and Fintech products\nPassionate about sharing knowledge and optimizing workflows\nDesign mentor at Designlab and IDF\, advocate for Agile development and process automation\n\n時間安排 Event Schedule \n13:30 – 13:40 活動開場 Opening Remarks\n13:40 – 14:20 《我們在UX產業泡沫時爆炸 Exploding in the UX Bubble》古念華 Nien-Hua Gu\n14:20 – 15:00 《奔跑吧，用熱情、用恐懼，向著卓越奔跑 Run! Branding Luxury Strategy: How to Maintain High Cost-Performance Value While Encouraging Customers to Pay More!
Achieving Both High CP Value and Brand Premium \n我們都知道品牌競爭的最後，常常是價格戰，而CP值，常常是消費者最後決定的關見因素。 \nIn market competition\, pricing wars are often the last battleground\, and cost-performance (CP) value is frequently the key factor influencing consumer decisions. However\, what consumers perceive as high CP value is often the result of painful discounting strategies by brands. \nConversely\, high-end brands\, while attracting a loyal customer base\, often struggle to rapidly increase sales volume\, leaving them with no choice but to raise the average transaction value. Each approach has its own advantages and challenges. \nBut is it possible for consumers to view a brand as having high CP value while still being willing to pay more for its products? How can these seemingly contradictory goals be achieved—driving up both transaction value and sales volume? \nWhich Brands Have Achieved This? \nTake Nissan and Lexus\, for example. Buyers of both brands describe their purchases as high CP value\, yet Lexus models are priced three times higher than Nissan’s. \nA Nissan SUV costs around NT$800\,000\, while a Lexus SUV starts at NT$2.4 million or more. \nWhich brand do you think sells more? Surprisingly\, Lexus consistently outsells Nissan. In 2024\, Lexus had a market share of 6.23%\, compared to Nissan’s 4.16%. \nClearly\, Lexus has achieved both high CP value and brand premium\, successfully increasing both transaction value and sales volume—just take a look at the sheer number of Lexus cars on the streets of Taiwan! \nHow Did Lexus Achieve This? Can This Strategy Be Replicated? \nSimilarly\, both CK (Calvin Klein) and NET attract consumers who believe they are getting great CP value. However\, CK maintains significantly higher sales and achieves a brand premium. \nWhat Is CK’s Strategy? Can It Be Applied to Other Brands? \nThis meetup is a personal business exploration by founders Mark and Kim\, aiming to decode these strategies and find ways to apply them to their own B2B and B2C brands. \n“As the hosts of this event\, we (M&K) are excited to hold another meetup this February. Through our unique perspective and available resources\, we want to analyze real-world branding strategies together with our attendees. We firmly believe that business challenges can be solved through case studies\, hands-on applications and cross-industry discussions. Our goal is to elevate both personal careers and brand management to a higher strategic level. We’re looking forward to an insightful and engaging conversation!” Please check your email two days before the event for the exact address.） This is a small event with limited capacity\, so please register early! Introductions and getting to know each other \n14:30 – 15:40  Accessible Luxury案例分享 Case Study: Accessible Luxury \n15:40 – 15:50  Break \n15:50 – 16:50  凝塑新的商業策略，套用到自家品牌 Developing Business Strategies & Applying Them to Your Brand \n16:50 – 17:10  自由交流、聊天時間 Free networking and chat time \n本場小聚適合誰來 Who Should Attend \n小聚適合以下幾種人參與 This meetup is ideal for： \n\n本身在做行銷、創意類型、品牌相關工作的主管\n在創業、開發產品的老闆或產品人\n對品牌策略有高度興趣的實戰家\n想要認識一群知識型朋友的人\n想要學習如何累積品牌敏感度的人\n\n\nMarketing\, creative or brand-related managers\nEntrepreneurs or product developers\nBrand strategy enthusiasts\nThose looking to meet knowledge-driven friends\nIndividuals wanting to learn how to develop brand sensitivity\n\n活動價格 Fee \n個人票 Individual Ticket： NT$590 \n雙人團購票 Pair Ticket：NT$1\,100 \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2501111209338421899010 \n關於XD CINEMA體驗設計電影院 About XD CINEMA \n我們聊不常為人所知的人性洞察、為商業、品牌、個人體驗藏入亮點。 \nWe explore lesser-known human insights and infuse them into business\, brand and personal experiences. Mendelssohn's Piano Trio
DESCRIPTION:一場天才姊弟不為人知的音樂競藝 \n台灣知名古典網紅YouTuber首度合作 \n生動說書ｘ首席演繹　 \n10週年特別場 解鎖你不無聊的音樂人生 \nA Hidden Musical Duel of Genius Siblings \nExperience the untold story of the Mendelssohn siblings’ musical rivalry \nCollaboration with Taiwan’s Renowned Classical Music YouTuber \nA lively storytelling session paired with performances by a leading chamber musician \n10th Anniversary Special Event \nUnlock the exciting side of your musical life through this unforgettable celebration \n \n在YouTube頻道累積50萬訂閱、突破2000萬觀看人次的「音樂家的無聊人生」，可說是台灣古典音樂領域最受矚目的YouTube頻道之一，創作者許崴（海牛）以幽默的口吻、生動的旁白，結合清楚的譜例畫面，深入淺出介紹古典音樂，至今創下數支超過百萬點閱的影片成績。 \n“Musician Seacow” has accumulated 500\,000 subscribers and exceeded 20 million views on YouTube. It can be said to be one of the most watched YouTube channels in the field of classical music in Taiwan. The creator Xu Wei (Hainiu) uses a humorous tone\, vivid narration\, and clear score examples to introduce classical music in an easy-to-understand way. So far\, he has created several videos with over one million views. In 2024\, the cross-border production “Funeral of Spring Flowers” was launched to tour the three regions of North\, Central and South Taiwan\, which was well received and received enthusiastic responses. Participating in the 10th anniversary of the Eslite Chamber Music Festival for the first time\, the “Funeral of Spring Flowers. Extended Special Performance” will be launched. In the form of an interpretive concert with in-depth explanations and complete performances\, the audience is invited to listen to the musical talents of the most talented composers in history – Mendelssohn. \nFelix Mendelssohn\, known as the happiest classical musician\, not only has an enviable family background\, but is also known as the most talented composer in history\, having written his first symphony at the age of 15. But what many people probably don’t know is that there is actually a more talented genius beside him\, who is buried in the shadows\, and that is his sister\, Fanny Mendelssohn. \nLike her brother Felix\, sister Fanny showed great musical talent since childhood. However\, the social environment at that time did not allow “women” to become musicians. Fanny could only treat music as a hobby\, and her works could only be published under her brother’s name. The two siblings still had contradictory and complex emotions in their mutual support. However\, Fanny\, who was full of ambition for music\, did not easily bow to fate. At the age of 40\, she finally made a bold and courageous decision: she would publish her works under her own name. And Felix finally gave Fanny his blessing. \nInspired by this\, Fanny wrote the most important work of her life\, the Piano Trio in D minor\, which echoed the Piano Trio in C minor completed by Felix at the same time. The two pieces have very similar structures\, but compared to the optimistic and bright personality of Felix’s trio\, Fanny’s music contains more longing and tragic colors\, as if revealing through music that these similar souls have had completely different life experiences. \nThis performance will be performed by Xu Wei (Hai Niu)\, the creator of “The Boring Life of Musicians”\, who will play the piano\, and will be accompanied by Taipei City Symphony Orchestra Assistant Principal Hu Tingxuan and National Symphony Orchestra Principal Cello Shangdi Caimen\, who will play the last two piano trios left by the Mendelssohn siblings. With Hai Niu’s approachable commentary\, the audience will be led to enter classical music from a different perspective\, and through their wonderful but short musical journey and life\, they will have a deeper understanding of the bond between this pair of talented siblings and the eternal classics they left for future generations. \n｜演出 Performance｜ \n鋼琴、說書人／許崴（YouTube頻道「音樂家的無聊人生」主持人） \n小提琴／胡庭瑄（台北市立交響樂團助理首席） \n大提琴／上地彩門（國家交響樂團大提琴首席） \nPiano player and storyteller / Xu Wei (host of YouTube channel “Musician Seacow”) \nViolin / Hu Tingxuan (Assistant Principal of Taipei Symphony Orchestra) \nCello／Shangdi Caimen (Principal Cello of National Symphony Orchestra) \n｜曲目 Repertoire｜　※本場演出為「解說音樂會」形式 This performance is in the form of an “explanatory concert” \n費利克斯・孟德爾頌：c小調第二號鋼琴三重奏，Op. 66 \nFelix Mendelssohn: Piano Trio No. 2 in c minor\, Op. 66 \n芳妮・孟德爾頌：d小調鋼琴三重奏，Op. 11 \nFanny Mendelssohn: Piano Trio in d minor\, Op. 11 \n報名 To apply：https://www.opentix.life/event/1866021291936804864

Exploring the Beauty of Curves：安東尼·高第與他的建築藝術 Antoni Gaudí and His Architectural Art
\nWhen discussing architecture\, the phrase “Straight lines belong to humans\, but curves belong to God” finds its best interpretation in Antoni Gaudí. \nAs one of the most iconic figures of Catalan Modernism\, Gaudí’s works are not just architectural masterpieces but a fusion of art\, nature\, spirituality and creativity. Through his most famous buildings\, we will delve into the cultural and artistic movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, exploring how Catalan Modernism influenced and even anticipated the evolution of 20th-century architecture. \nWith its organic curves and colorful mosaic tiles\, Park Güell exemplifies the perfect harmony between architecture and nature. \nThis house showcases Moorish influences intertwined with natural inspirations\, revealing the early aesthetics of his architectural genius. \nNicknamed La Pedrera (The Quarry)\, this masterpiece defies traditional architecture with its fluid façade and sculptural rooftop chimneys. \nGaudí’s greatest and most ambitious project\, still under construction today\, represents the fusion of architecture\, art and faith. \nThrough light\, color and organic forms\, Gaudí’s buildings offer not only visual spectacle but also an immersive spiritual experience. \n講座內容 Lecture Highlights \n．高第與加泰隆尼亞現代主義\n．建築中的自然與靈性之美\n．高第的七大世界遺產之旅\n．高第的旅行靈感與建築啟發 \n\nGaudí and the Catalan Modernist Movement\nThe Beauty of Nature & Spirituality in Architecture\nA Journey Through Gaudí’s Seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites\nTravel Inspirations & Architectural Insights from Gaudí’s Works\n\n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2501100119351018187894 \n講師 Speaker｜許派崇 Pai-Chung Hsu \n臺灣知名的建築師，專精於建築設計、都市設計、歷史建築修復與再利用等領域。 \n🏛 Renowned Taiwanese ArchitectSpecializing in architectural design\, urban planning and historic building preservation. \n📚 Education & Experience \n\nMaster’s Degree in Architecture from Chung Yuan Christian University\nMaster’s Degree in Advanced Technology Management from University of South Australia\nExtensive experience in commercial architecture\, including shopping malls and department stores\nFounder of Pai-Chung Hsu Architects\nLecturer at National Taiwan University of Arts\, focusing on heritage restoration and cultural preservation\n\n🌍 Architectural Travel EnthusiastHaving traveled extensively across Europe\, he has led architectural tours in Spain\, Germany\, the Southern United States\, Bhutan and Shanxi\, China. \nThe “Xin Forum” is located on the second floor of the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park\, in the West Tobacco Factory.
