Yong Tsun Ceramics — Solo Exhibition by Chiu Yung-Feng
\n“Yong Tsun Ceramics” is a unique technique developed by Chiu Yung-Feng during the early stages of his artistic journey\, inspired by the spiral shape of peeling an apple. This method is distinct from the traditional coiling technique used in clay building. A nature lover\, Chiu takes inspiration from the earth\, constantly observing geological formations and rock surfaces. He also rediscovered the traditional Chinese landscape painting technique of “cun” (wrinkle texture strokes). Through continuous experimentation and refinement\, he combined these with his internal landscapes and years of work to create the “Yong Tsun Ceramics: Walking the Mountains” series. \nUsing clay as his brush\, Chiu strives to depict natural landscapes in his forms. The layered and expressive surfaces of his works invite viewers to wander through surreal mountain and rock formations\, allowing them to sense the passage of time and the changes in nature\, embracing the long-lost beauty of simplicity and authenticity.

\nAs materiality becomes a central focus in contemporary art and cultural studies\, and the boundaries between craft and art blur\, ceramics\, with its highly technical expertise and rich cultural heritage\, is increasingly gaining attention from art developers. For museums\, examining the material characteristics and cultural significance of ceramics offers a new perspective on art history and opens up new avenues of exploration\, making ceramics an asset for further expansion in the understanding of materials. \nThis exhibition\, based on the museum’s publication Ash Glaze: The Story and Application of Plant Ash\, traces the cultural evolution\, scientific properties\, and creative expressions of individual materials. It brings together kiln samples across time and space\, as well as works from the same stylistic lineage\, to offer both a foundation of knowledge and an opportunity to appreciate works of the same theme across eras and types. \nAsh glaze\, which transforms ash into a glassy surface on ceramics\, has a history spanning thousands of years\, from its discovery as natural falling ash to its deliberate collection and style development. It has permeated the brilliant history of East Asian civilization. Today\, ash glaze is not only studied as a material but is also explored as a spiritual and social medium. This exhibition seeks to uncover new possibilities for the expression and meaning of ash glaze by examining its material properties and its relationship to the creative process. From Discovery to Exploration \n窯爐，一個轉生宇宙。 \nThe kiln is a universe of transformation. \nInside the kiln\, clay bodies undergo physical changes as the temperature rises\, becoming harder and more durable. The flames\, air currents\, and ash inside the kiln move about\, leaving various traces on the surface of the clay. Alkaline substances from the ash of plant fuel combine with acidic substances in the clay at high temperatures\, forming a glassy surface known as ash glaze. \nThe term “glaze” itself has only been used for about 1\,000 years. However\, artificial ash-glazed artifacts date back nearly 4\,000 years to China’s Shang Dynasty. Early pottery with shiny surfaces\, both inside and out\, became more durable and water-resistant\, making them ideal for practical use. \nWith the discovery and exploration of different types of plant ash\, ash glaze evolved not only as a practical material for everyday use but also developed into a highly specialized craft in professional and imperial kilns\, becoming a significant symbol of East Asian culture. \nIn Taiwan\, the use of ash glaze has been shaped by two main influences: the traditional method of natural falling ash from wood-fired kilns and the modernized techniques brought about by industrial and educational systems. Lin Bao-jia\, who studied ceramics in Japan\, was instrumental in acquiring a scientific understanding of ash glaze. After returning to Taiwan\, he collected materials\, conducted experiments\, and provided advice to local factories and individuals. His “Taolin” studio greatly influenced many ceramic practitioners\, including Cai Rong-you\, his son-in-law Xue Rui-fang\, and Zhang Ji-tao\, who took up ceramics after retiring from the military. These individuals continued to develop their own styles and approaches to ash glaze based on Lin’s teachings\, influencing subsequent generations of creators. \nDespite the convenience of synthetic glazes\, there are still those who are deeply passionate about the vast\, unknown potential of natural falling ash and continue to challenge themselves with it. Artists like Lin Jin-zhong and Luo Shao-qi\, for example\, have experimented with local materials to establish their unique ash glaze systems\, leaving remarkable contributions to the field. \nAsh glaze can also be seen as an expression of lifestyle and value\, distinct from the rarity and exclusivity often associated with traditional imperial kilns. Throughout history\, ash glaze has served both a practical purpose and provided a direct aesthetic experience. In this section\, pioneering ceramic artists Qiu Huan-tang and Shi Nai-yue share their silver-haired years of living with ash glaze through the ash-glazed painted plates they developed\, and their daily life filled with music\, language learning\, and the joy of painting. Another couple\, Qiu Yu-qi and Guo Ya-wen\, who operate a ceramics school\, balance their farming and teaching practices\, passing on the craftsmanship they learned from veteran potters and sharing the elegance of ash glaze with the public. \nTea and ceramics have always been inseparable\, and this exhibition explores how ash glaze and tea intersect in modern life. The transformation of traditional folk kilns and collaborations between art schools and rural communities in producing ash glaze make it a vehicle for social participation\, presenting exciting possibilities for the role of ash glaze in the contemporary spectrum of daily life.

Design Thinking Workshop
\nThe introductory Design Thinking workshop is ideal for students with no design background. There are no textbooks or formal syllabi; instead\, using tools and materials from Stanford\, participants will be guided through the five steps of design thinking to tackle workplace or personal challenges from a designer’s perspective! \nWhether you’re a working professional or a student\, the knowledge gained from the workshop can be applied to real-world scenarios in your workplace or academic environment. \nThe workshop coach\, Cha Cha\, attended Stanford d.school in 2016 to study Design Thinking. She brings the essence of Stanford’s d.school courses\, using a step-by-step learning approach that helps participants easily grasp the principles of Design Thinking. Through interactive games and tasks\, participants will develop teamwork skills\, engage in brainstorming\, and share feedback. Together\, they’ll face timed challenges\, resulting in unexpected added value by the end of the session! \nThis interactive and experiential learning approach encourages participants to roll up their sleeves\, think critically\, and take action. Ideas won’t remain abstract or hidden—participants will be guided to put them into practice. Once you’ve experienced this process\, you won’t forget it! This is why HR professionals and educators highly recommend this hands-on learning workshop! \n課程大綱 Workshop Outline \n\n設計思考：認識設計思考及歷史典故\n成功案例：設計思考經典案例分享介紹\n動腦挑戰：少說大道理，直接動手做\n思考撞擊：體驗設計思考流程與步驟\n\n\nDesign Thinking: Introduction to design thinking and its historical background\nSuccess Stories: Classic examples of design thinking\nHands-on Challenge: Less talk\, more action\nThought Collision: Experience the design thinking process step by step\n\n講師介紹 Instructor Introduction \nCha Cha老師\n目前為查查創意有限公司主理人及國際非營利組織Creative Mornings台北城市代表。 \nCha Cha is currently the founder of Cha Cha Creative Co.\, Ltd. and serves as the Taipei City representative for the international non-profit organization Creative Mornings. \nShe has accumulated years of experience in the cultural and creative industries\, previously serving as the COO of Xue Xue Institute. In 2011\, she was introduced to design thinking and\, driven by her passion for learning\, founded the Design Thinking fan page on Facebook. To date\, she has led over 100 workshops and seminars on design thinking for corporations\, government agencies\, schools\, and NGOs. \nTo address the lack of resources in Taiwan\, she traveled to Stanford University’s d.school in 2016 for further training in Design Thinking. In 2017\, she was invited to attend the Design Thinking Conference at HPI University in Germany\, where she exchanged ideas with global design thinking leaders. Her goal is to contribute her knowledge and experience to help Taiwanese businesses\, schools\, and society embrace creativity and put it into action. \nCorporate Clients: Google Taiwan\, LINE\, Roche Pharmaceuticals\, Janssen Pharmaceuticals\, Far Eastone Telecommunications\, Synopsys\, Merry Electronics\, CTBC Bank\, Cathay United Bank\, First Commercial Bank\, Cooperative Bank\, Land Bank of Taiwan\, Taiwan SME Bank\, Shanghai Commercial Bank\, Shin Kong Life Insurance\, MetLife\, Yuanta Investment\, Sercomm Corporation\, Xue Xue Institute\, Justco\, Citiesocial\, Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance\, BKA Knowledge School\, Pinkoi Experience\, Hara Cinema Heart Academy\, Skiva\, Hans Technology\, and Nishi Strategy. \nGovernment Agencies and NGOs: Ministry of Transportation and Communications\, Ministry of Culture\, Ministry of Education\, Hsinchu County Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Taoyuan County Cultural Affairs Bureau\, Lienchiang County Transportation Bureau\, ITRI\, Xue Xue Institute Cultural Education Foundation\, The Miscellaneous School\, Amnesty International Taiwan\, Taiwan Design Research Institute\, Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training\, Kaohsiung-Pingtung-Penghu-Taitung Branch Youth Career Development Center\, Infinity Love Association\, Li Xian Educational Foundation\, Taoyuan Design Center\, Agriculture Training Association\, Xindian Xindao Church\, Taipei Tabernacle Church\, Linkou Tabernacle Church\, Village Seed Educational Development Association\, Youth Empowerment Program\, Workface Taipei\, Children Welfare League Foundation\, MeDA Museum Education Development Association\, Fun Taiwan\, and Keedle Seed Music Education. \nAcademic Institutions: National Taiwan University\, National Chengchi University\, National Taipei University\, Chung Yuan Christian University\, Tamkang University\, Chang Jung Christian University\, Shih Hsin University\, Ming Chuan University\, Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences\, Ching Kuo Institute of Technology\, Ling Tung University\, Minghsin University of Science and Technology\, Hsuan Chuang University\, Xue Xue Experimental Education Institution\, Minglun High School\, Fuxing Commercial High School\, Banqiao High School\, Little Kids Elementary School\, and Yilan Penglai Elementary School. Open to individuals aged 18 and above \n報名 To apply：https://www.accupass.com/eflow/ticket/2408100243051249668665 \n課程人數 Participants \n預計約10±位 Approximately 10 participants \n課程地點 Venue \n台北市大安區通安街46號2樓｜鄰近信義安和捷運站車站，三號出口右轉，步行約2分鐘。https://maps.app.goo.gl/ZLtJzSeCPyq9DgwM8 \n2/F\, No. 46\, Tong’an St.\, Da’an Dist.\, Taipei City｜2-minute walk from Xinyi Anhe MRT Station\, Exit 3 \nYukanna_Space 勇敢的空間\n隱身在大安區老宅二樓的場域\n灑落斜射的自然採光\n白牆和水泥交錯\,植物在露臺群落\n我們小小的\n但小的剛剛好呢\n期待你能陪著我們一起將幻想發揚光大 \nNestled on the second floor of an old building in Da’an District\, Yukanna Space is a small yet perfectly-sized venue\, filled with natural light\, white walls\, cement accents\, and a patio adorned with plants.
