Performance at Dadaocheng
This performance will feature a vocalist accompanied by a trio of guitar, double bass, and accordion, presenting enka culture from Japan’s Showa era and popular early Dadaocheng songs. We have invited renowned pop musicians Chen Hong-zhu, Tan Qi-xu, Wang Qun-ting and Cai Wei-jing to reinterpret the songs recorded and covered by “The accordion music of Taipei Light Music Band”, a band formed from the Japanese occupation period to the early Republic era. This group, active at harvest festivals across Taiwan during the rice industry boom, brought songs that resonated deeply with Taiwanese people educated in Japanese from 1895 to 1945—particularly those aged 78 and above.
For the elderly, these early Japanese ballads represent “freedom”, and singing them, especially in groups, brings shared joy. Dadaocheng was chosen for this performance because of its historical significance as an economic, artistic, cultural and educational hub with strong ties to Japan. Beyond singing, the Taiwanese learned to play various instruments, and this event aims to recreate that cultural era with a new performance style.
We hope this event will immerse Taiwanese people and society in the everyday life of Taiwan during the Showa period. By listening to musical performances, observing expressions and movements, and hearing the dialogues between different instruments played by Taiwanese and Japanese musicians, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the Showa-era ballad culture and the emotions of the elderly from that time. The goal is to evoke emotions and seek resonance.
