Touch Touch Art Exhibition

The exhibition “Touch Touch Art Exhibition: A Tactile Journey Through Architectural History” will make its stop in Taipei, curated by Fine Miner’s Pace Wu. This unique exhibition showcases the architectural history of the Pantheon in Paris through tactile relief paintings developed in France for the visually impaired, combined with descriptive audio narratives. Dr. Ho Shih-Yun, who previously led descriptive tours at the National Palace Museum, is collaborating to create the descriptive audio system for this exhibition. The aim is to promote artistic equality. The visual design for the exhibition is crafted by Haeliu Design, where the main graphic makes use of readable yet challenging text, allowing the general audience to begin experiencing the unwelcoming environment often faced by the visually impaired through graphic design.

The exhibition encourages visitors to use their fingertips to explore, transforming touch into mental imagery, and combining it with descriptive audio to learn and experience the Pantheon. The guided tours will utilize a “tactile map” paired with a “point pen”, enabling visually impaired visitors to explore the exhibition independently. True equality can only be realized when the environment is accessible enough for self-navigation.

The exhibit will feature origami-crafted darkrooms, where visitors will experience the exhibition deprived of sight, relying entirely on touch to reconstruct the shape of the Pantheon and to understand how its architecture, art, and history interact with space and time. For contrast, the Carcassonne Castle series will be displayed in a traditional visual format. The curation replaces all visual cues with tactile design.

The Pantheon stands above other buildings, bearing the marks of French history. This exhibition will delve into the architectural innovations and historical significance of Soufflot’s 18th-century project, the first of its kind in Paris, highlighting its structural features and innovations. The works on display will showcase the Pantheon’s exterior (plan/elevation/section) and detail its dimensions and structure. Additionally, the intricate carvings and frescoes that adorn both the exterior and interior will be presented. The exhibition will also explore the crypt, now the resting place of the Republic’s great figures, with tactile representations of its spaces and history. A highlight of the exhibition will be a presentation of Foucault’s pendulum, first demonstrated at the Pantheon, proving the Earth’s rotation. Today, the Pantheon serves as a venue for official and consecration ceremonies in France, standing as a monumental record of Parisian history. Let us embark on this mental journey through the Pantheon of Paris.
