From private collection to national art museum, an art institution that breaks the traditional museum mentality
Founded in 1897 by Liverpool sugar merchant Sir Henry Tate, the Tate Gallery in the UK initially developed as a national gallery. Today, it encompasses four galleries in the UK: Tate Britain, the oldest; Tate Liverpool, a major hub for Northern art; Tate St Ives, deeply engaged in local cultural development; and Tate Modern, the most popular. As the UK’s most representative and highly visited gallery, the Tate Gallery boasts a collection encompassing 500 years of British and Western art, with a particularly significant collection of masterpieces by William H. The hundreds of paintings and tens of thousands of watercolors and drawings donated by Turner during his final years are among the most sought-after and must-see attractions. In recent years, the Tate Modern has pioneered thematic exhibitions that transcend timelines, establishing it as one of the most forward-thinking art museums in the world.
The world’s largest exhibition of William Turner’s authentic paintings debuts in Taiwan
During his lifetime, William Turner established a fund to aid impoverished artists, a key reason for the Tate Modern to establish the Turner Prize, Britain’s most prestigious art award. After his death, some of his paintings were bequeathed to the nation, while the majority remain at the Tate Modern. As the largest collection of Turner’s works, the Tate Modern will present 80 authentic Turner paintings, organized into seven sections: English Landscapes, the Alps, Venice, Storms at Sea, Between Sea and Sky, Historical Stories, and Sublime Aesthetics, spanning his career. To highlight the defining era of Turner’s work, the Tate Modern has also selected nearly 30 works by contemporary artists, creating an unprecedented, largest, and most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to William Turner.
Highlights of the exhibition area
Starting from the British landscape
Turner’s early explorations of the English landscape established him as a passionate observer of the sublime power of nature, and his meticulous depiction of these natural scenes further cemented his fame. To authentically capture the atmosphere of his surroundings, Turner often immersed himself in nature for research, incorporating on-site sketches, memory, and imagination into his paintings, transforming these elements into breathtaking compositions.

Walk into the mountains
On his first trip to Europe in 1802, Turner was instantly captivated by the majestic beauty of the Alps. He began exploring the mountains, documenting his experiences firsthand through sketches and watercolors. Turner was also captivated by the unique light and atmosphere of the mountains. He observed the reflections of colors in snow, water, and sky, completing thousands of elementary studies and applying unexpectedly bold colors to striking effect. His mastery of light and color inspired Monet and the French Impressionists, and his innovative techniques have influenced generations of artists.

Historical Stories
In the 18th century, Turner lived in a world where paintings that vividly depicted myths or biblical stories were considered the most noble form of fine art. Most paintings tended towards a poetic and picturesque classicism. However, Turner broke new ground. He employed classical scenes and innovative painting techniques to create paintings that were less idealistic, more emotionally affecting, and in line with emerging tastes. His works not only won the admiration of his contemporaries, but also amazed viewers for centuries to come.

Venice: A magnificent city
Of the many artists who have depicted Venice, Turner is one of the few who has found an emotional connection with the unique character of this magnificent water city. His career is remarkable for its achievements and innovations, and his paintings of Venice were immediately recognized as some of his most magical and dazzling works upon their first viewing. To this day, Turner’s vision remains uniquely significant, capturing both the beauty and sadness of Venice, and the terrifying threat of the sea swallowing it.

Sea storm
Seascapes comprise over half of Turner’s oeuvre, including paintings of whaling vessels, fishing boats, shipwrecks and battles. These are his most explosive and evocative works, capturing the perils of the ocean and humanity’s insignificance and powerlessness in the face of nature.

Between Sea and Sky
Turner not only captured the majestic power of nature in his paintings, but also emphasized its poetic and hypnotic qualities. His depictions of sea and sky involved hundreds of close studies of details such as drifting clouds, energetic waves, and surging surf. These details, when viewed together, reveal Turner’s profound awe for both the sea and the sky.

The sublime aesthetics of nature
In his later years, Turner produced numerous paintings that depict purely light and atmospheric elements. These abstract works, containing minimal figurative or topographical elements, were often considered “unfinished” at the time. However, the number of such works preserved in Turner’s studio suggests that he had completed them to his satisfaction. These works, embodying Turner’s late style, earned him the reputation of a prophet of modern painting.
