The Seamless Dialogue Between Architecture & Nature: A Journey from Classics to Contemporary Innovations
Twenty-four years ago, designer Johnny Chiu spent a year living in Scandinavia. Upon his recent return, he was struck by how Nordic design has evolved beyond its traditionally perceived minimalist aesthetics, embracing boldness and dynamism. From BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)’s avant-garde architectural experiments to Michelin-starred restaurant Noma’s sensory-driven dining experience, Scandinavia is redefining design in unprecedented ways, challenging and reshaping our conventional understanding of creativity.
In this lecture, Johnny Chiu will share his firsthand insights and discoveries, taking you on a journey through Scandinavian design’s remarkable transformations and groundbreaking innovations.
Architecture’s Evolution: Merging with Nature in New and Unexpected Ways
Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is an iconic institution, known for its seamless integration with nature. But the dialogue between architecture and the environment does not end there. Norway’s Under – Sunken Restaurant further explores the symbiosis of built structures and natural surroundings, creating an immersive experience that redefines the boundaries of space. As times change, architecture continues to evolve, forging new ways to respond to human interaction with nature.

When Constraints Spark Creativity: Pushing the Boundaries of Architectural Thinking
Faced with the challenge of preserving historical ruins, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) transformed limitations into design inspiration by sinking the Danish Maritime Museum (M/S Maritime Museum) underground, ingeniously embedding it into a disused dry dock. This innovative solution not only resolved site constraints but also showcased how architecture thrives under restrictions, challenging our perceptions of spatial design and demonstrating how architectural breakthroughs emerge within constraints.

Redefining Public Spaces: The Ever-Evolving “Living Room” of the City
Sweden’s Stockholm Public Library (Asplund Library) is a 20th-century classic, symbolizing a temple of knowledge. In contrast, Finland’s Oodi Helsinki Central Library illustrates how public spaces adapt to modern times, catering to ever-changing societal needs. Libraries are no longer just repositories for books; they have become the “living rooms” of cities, fostering community engagement and cultural exchange.

A Curated 8-Day Danish Design Journey with Johnny Chiu
Johnny Chiu
(World Design Experience powered by San Diego Design Week)都能看到他的身影,讓世界體驗台灣的設計文化。
Johnny Chiu
With educational and professional experience across six countries, Johnny Chiu has developed a unique design philosophy that extends beyond aesthetics—his work is a conversation with communities.
