動物為伴 國立故宮博物院特展 Special Exhibition: Animal Companions

動物與人的關係密不可分，向來是文藝創作的重要題材。本次「動物為伴」特展，旨在透過歷代豐富的圖像，探索畫家筆下動物所承載的角色與情感，呈現動物與人從單純的飼養關係到深層心靈依靠的各種互動樣貌。

在這次的展件中，動物時而化身吉祥符號與信仰載體，如諧音取義的瑞獸或神仙身旁的靈寵，寄託著人們對福祿與超凡的嚮往；時而反映社會階級與生活境遇，從彰顯富貴威儀的駿馬，到象徵安貧樂道、伴隨文人清遊的蹇驢，皆是人物身分的鮮明寫照。

此外，動物與人相關圖像最動人的部分，莫過於展現兩者間真摯的情感互動。如牧童與水牛間的親暱嬉戲、馬夫與駿馬在狂風中的相依相守，乃至於深閨中受人疼愛的家貓，或是與修行者逗趣互動的靈猿。這些畫作捕捉了動物與人之間無需言語的默契，展現了從勞役工具轉化為友朋伴侶的可能。

Exploring the Bonds Between Humans and Animals through Ancient Art

The relationship between humans and animals has always been an inseparable theme in art and literature. The special exhibition “Animal Companions” invites you to explore the diverse roles and emotions captured by artists throughout history. From simple domestic ties to deep spiritual connections, this collection reveals the many facets of our interaction with the animal kingdom.

Exhibition Themes

• Symbols of Fortune & Faith: Animals often appear as auspicious symbols or divine pets of deities, embodying human aspirations for luck, prosperity, and the supernatural.

• Reflections of Social Status: From majestic steeds that display wealth and power to the humble donkeys accompanying scholars in their simple, virtuous lives, animals serve as vivid portraits of their owners’ identities and social standing.

• Heartfelt Interactions: The most touching part of the exhibition lies in the genuine emotional bonds: a cowherd playing with his water buffalo, a groom and his horse huddling together against a gale, or a cherished house cat in a lady’s private chamber. These works capture a wordless tacit understanding, showing how animals evolved from laborers into beloved friends.
