Three Years Later, Where Are You Now? —— “Why Do We Move?” Series of Talks

On the journey of relocation, you are not alone — come listen to their stories!

If you could live by your own free will, what kind of life would you choose?

Post-pandemic, the phenomenon of relocating within the island has become increasingly common. If you also feel the stirrings of a desire to relocate, come hear what the pioneers on this path have to say.

Some of them wanted to change their environment and pursue their ideal lifestyle.
Some sought to start their own business and find the right place for their dreams.
Others hoped to leave the city to provide their children with a closer connection to nature.

In “Why Do We Move?”, the stories of relocation pioneers from the “Relocators’ Confessions” section of the Jimi Handbook from 2020 to 2022 are gathered, and after many years, they were revisited and followed up, providing a real depiction of the changes brought by relocation over time.

To celebrate the publication, we invite five groups of relocators from the book to share their stories through two online talks, one offline discussion, and a mini book exhibition. They will share their practical and touching life experiences: how to achieve their goals step by step and whether their initial ideals were realized in the process.

On the journey of relocation, you will find what is truly important—
Are you ready?

Ten Years: Finding Myself Through Relocation

Relocation is never the end, but a beginning —

After ten years of relocation, from Tainan to Taitung, 阿勳, originally a photographer, discovered that he still couldn’t leave his camera after years of self-sustained living. Similarly, after ten years since her first relocation, 致蕙has moved from New Taipei and Miaoli to Hsinchu, transitioning from real estate agent to freelance work and eventually starting her own brand, continuously on the move.

Relocation, it turns out, is not the answer. It changes the relationship with oneself more than the external environment.
What have they lost and gained from their relocation? What changes in mindset have occurred?
What do they imagine relocation to be now?

  • 時間 Date & Time:7/19(五 Friday)19:30 – 21:30

Challenge! Starting a Business After Relocation

他們曾為了在鄉下找咖啡廳店面挨家挨戶詢問,找到後大刀闊斧裝修累到長皮蛇;

If you want to relocate, how about starting a bookstore or café?

舜子& Mindy moved from Taipei to downtown Kaohsiung and then to Meinong, where they started a café. 青樺&治德 finally settled in Zhuangwei, Yilan, opening the first independent bookstore in the area.

They have gone door to door looking for a café location in the countryside, exhausted themselves renovating, and pondered over whether to relocate again due to transportation issues for the bookstore.

How do you leave your original living environment to start your own business? What challenges might you face?
How do dreams, children’s growth, and living conditions intertwine to create new dynamics?

  • 時間 Date & Time:7/24(三 Wednesday)19:30 – 21:30

Offline Meetup: Relocation, Then What? — Everyday Stories of Hong Kong Art Workers in Taiwan

In 2015, Cherry from Hong Kong first set foot in Taiwan for a work interview and fell in love with the place. She pursued new skills, started a co-working space, married her same-sex partner, and settled in Tainan, transitioning from travel to permanent residence step by step.

In 2014, 穎魚, also from Hong Kong, moved to Taiwan for marriage. Initially a media journalist, she turned to freelance work and opened an independent bookstore “Poetry Living” to fully integrate into Taiwanese society, beginning a new journey.

How do you adjust your work environment and lifestyle when moving from one island to another? How did they establish their daily lives in Taiwan? What does “relocation” mean to these two Hong Kong art workers?
