The most Japanese-style New Year’s Eve celebration in Taiwan, 2025–2026.
A once-in-a-lifetime countdown experience 🎌
Join us as we ring the bell 108 times, cleansing the heart and spirit with each resonant tone as we welcome good fortune.
✦ The only shrine in Taiwan to host a New Year’s Eve bell-ringing ceremony
✦ Taoyuan Shrine opens at night once a year exclusively for this event
✦ An immersive cultural journey that faithfully recreates the essence of a traditional Japanese New Year
For the Japanese, “Joya-no-Kane” is an essential year-end tradition held on Ōmisoka (December 31).
On this night—known as “Joya”—people stay awake awaiting the arrival of the Toshigami-sama, the deity of harvest and good fortune. Before the deity descends, visitors go to shrines for the Ōharae purification ritual to cleanse the impurities accumulated throughout the year.
At Buddhist temples, monks ring the bell 108 times, symbolizing the purification of 108 earthly desires, allowing people to welcome a fresh beginning free of burdens.
Built in 1938 during the Japanese colonial period, Taoyuan Shrine is one of Taiwan’s most well-preserved shrine complexes. We hope this historic site allows everyone to appreciate its architectural beauty while experiencing the essence of authentic shrine culture and the unique atmosphere of the year’s end.
From 12/31 to 1/1, starting 20:00 on December 31…
The Taoyuan Shrine “Joya-no-Kane” New Year’s Eve celebration enters its fourth year.
This December 31, we once again invite you to welcome the New Year in the shrine’s timeless ambiance.
