Leo Lee, a pioneering artist and educator in ceramics in Taiwan, was born in 1943 in Taipei. After graduating with a major in sculpture from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, he began his ceramics career in 1970 under the mentorship of the renowned Taiwanese ceramist, WU Jang-Nung. Over the course of his career, he operated studios across Taipei and New Taipei City. In addition to being an artist, LEE was a passionate ceramic art educator, devoting his life mentoring numerous students. This exhibition commemorates the contributions of this ceramics pioneer to art of ceramics in Taiwan.
As a dedicated artist and educator, LEE played a key role in supporting local ceramics community and advancing ceramics research in Taiwan. He served as a lecturer, consultant, and juror for ceramics competitions at this museum. Furthermore, he gathered and led important ceramists in Taiwan, helping to enhance the development of local ceramics art. With his vision and selfless dedication, LEE opened new chapters for Taiwanese ceramics, ushering an era rich with innovative ideas and creative potential that warrants further research and investigation.
According to LEE’s vision, this exhibition is conceptually divided into two themes: creation and teaching. In the “creation” theme, three subtopics—Forms and Shapes, Observation in Nature, and From Realism to Abstract—showcase his brilliant artworks and his exploration of the possibilities of ceramics in a casual, joyful manner. This theme also highlights the diversity of his work, featuring not only ceramics but also sculptures, digital prints, and sketches. The “teaching” theme demonstrates LEE’s dedication and generosity as an educator, as he selflessly shared his knowledge and experience. He streamlined the creative process so that even children could enjoy making ceramics and bringing art into everyday life.
Sadly, during the preparation of this exhibition, LEE passed away. As a result, LEE’s family and members of his studio completed the final preparations. Special thanks are extended to LEE’s wife LI Mei-Mei and artists from his studio, KUAN Wen-Hung, Khong Yao, CHEN Li-Min, Barry You, and CHIU Pi-Hsia, for their contribution to this exhibition. Special appreciation also goes to CHANG Ching-Yuan and Winnie Yang, for writing articles for this event.
