新媒體藝術劇場|永生動物園 The Eternal Zoo

‖ 演出介紹 Performance Introduction ‖

《永生動物園》由藝術家張晏慈概念發展與執導創作,一場跨越結合數位科技、打擊樂與合成器音樂演出(廖海廷)、劇場AI視覺設計(李國漢)、以及舞蹈表演(廖思瑋)的新媒體藝術劇場作品。故事圍繞在人類與其他物種關係的探討,從動物園的觀看行為到對動物神化的想像,以臺灣梅花鹿、亞洲象林旺、臺灣黑熊與楊氏淺色小豹蛺蝶、臺灣雲豹等野生動物與圈養動物為對象,探討之於人類、之於地球生命的美學體驗與哲學反思。

「第一章:重生 Rebirth」描述臺灣梅花鹿的滅絕與重生。1969年左右在野外滅絕,1984年透過動物園育種,在墾丁放養,臺灣梅花鹿的重生之路,最初雖然是學者專家的縝密計畫,象徵人類返還自然的心意,如今或許反而造成林地環境等另一層問題。

「第二章:歡慶 Celebration」林旺在2003年長眠,許多臺灣民眾非常難過。林旺在二戰期間擔任運輸砲彈、糧食的工作,甚至軍隊移動到不同鄉村小鎮時,以表演獲取糧食與旅費。抵臺初期仍然在南部軍營,直到1954年,台北市立動物園將林旺接到台北,並且與另一頭大象配對「結婚」,受到民眾歡迎與祝福。

「第三章:崩坍的世界 A Collapsing World」啟發自紀錄片《一隻臺灣黑熊之死》以及臺灣被稱為「蝴蝶王國」的歷史。紀錄片描述了保育人員拯救落入陷阱的黑熊,與當地居民溝通的過程。最終黑熊死於獵人槍下,揭示了野生動物保育、法律規範、以及地方文化的衝突。捕蝶產業起源於日治時期,1960年代,蝴蝶加工業再度興起,前後共二十年間,出口數量達上億隻。隨著環境變遷、土地開發以及過度捕捉,許多臺灣特有品種消失滅絕。

「第四章:神獸 The Mythical Beast 」臺灣雲豹在列入保育類動物前就已經消逝,象徵著自然界的失衡與無法挽回的消亡。最後的場景展現了雲豹的意象,反思人類的復育行動,回到第一章,探討我們與自然環境間的複雜關係。

The Eternal Zoo is a new media art theater piece conceived and directed by artist Yen Tzu Chang. This innovative work combines digital technology, live percussion and synthesizer music (by Hai Ting Liao), theater-based AI visual design (by Kuo Han Lee) and dance performances (by Szu Wei Liao). The story explores the relationship between humans and other species, reflecting on themes from the way animals are observed in zoos to the mystic ideas of animals as symbols. The performance features wild and captive animals, including the Formosan sika deer, Asian elephant Lin Wang, Formosan black bear, the butterfly Ypthima formosana, and the Formosan clouded leopard, inviting philosophical and aesthetic contemplation on humanity’s role within the Earth’s ecosystem.

  • Chapter 1: Rebirth – This segment portrays the extinction and resurgence of the Formosan sika deer. The species went extinct in the wild around 1969 and was reintroduced in 1984 through breeding efforts. While initially a carefully planned conservation effort symbolizing humanity’s commitment to nature, it has also brought new challenges, such as its impact on forest ecosystems.
  • Chapter 2: Celebration – The story of Lin Wang, the beloved elephant who passed away in 2003, reflects the public’s deep connection with this creature. Lin Wang was known for his role in transporting supplies during World War II, and after settling in Taiwan, he was paired with another elephant in a symbolic “wedding” that delighted the public.
  • Chapter 3: A Collapsing World – Inspired by the documentary The Death of a Formosan Black Bear, this chapter highlights conservation conflicts through the story of rescuing a black bear from a trap. It reveals the difficulties of wildlife conservation and the clash between local customs and modern regulations. Taiwan’s past as a “Kingdom of Butterflies” is also explored, touching on the butterfly export boom that ultimately led to the extinction of many unique Taiwanese species.
  • Chapter 4: The Mythical Beast – Centered on the Formosan clouded leopard, which vanished before being listed as a protected species, this segment reflects the irreversible loss and imbalance in nature. It symbolically revisits humanity’s conservation efforts and returns to the complex relationship with the environment introduced in Chapter 1.

張晏慈 YEN TZU CHANG

張晏慈為臺灣新媒體藝術家/聲音藝術家,她的創作結合藝術、程式和多樣媒體技術。作品曾在許多國際會議和藝術/音樂節中展覽與演出,其中執導的新媒體舞蹈劇場作品《幻象複本2.0》為2023年林茲國際電子藝術節中的開幕首演,過去作品曾於roBOt 08 Festival、Linux Audio Conference、International Symposium on Electronic Arts、倫敦數位設計週Digital Design Weekend in London,以及Most Wanted: Music in Berlin等等場和展演。近年,受國內外單位的肯定,並獲選為進駐藝術家,包括巴賽隆納Hangar昂格藝術村、澳洲伯斯The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts – PICA,以及Arts@ITRI藝術家進駐工研院等知名機構。

Yen Tzu Chang is a Taiwanese new media and sound artist whose work integrates art, coding and multimedia technology. Her performances have been featured at numerous international festivals and conferences, including the Linz Ars Electronica Festival, roBOt 08 Festival and International Symposium on Electronic Arts.

█ 打擊樂現場演出/音樂設計 Live Percussion/Music Design

廖海廷 HAI TING LIAO

從擊樂手身份出發的創作者,專注於跨域的聲響呈現。近年專注於模組合成器、自然聲音取樣及原聲樂器的融合,透過劇場式聲響演出、專輯製作、現場聲音表演和跨域合作來實踐創作理念、探索各種發聲可能和聆聽的多樣性。現居台北,噪音印製發起人。現為國立臺灣藝術大學專任助理教授、Ableton Live認證講師、音樂/聲音工作者。

A composer and percussionist focused on cross-disciplinary sound production, blending modular synthesizers, natural sound samples and acoustic instruments to explore the diversity of sound. He currently serves as an assistant professor at the National Taiwan University of Arts and is an Ableton Live certified instructor.

█ 舞蹈演出/編舞 Dance Performance/Choreography

廖思瑋 SZU WEI LIAO

目前就讀於國立臺北藝術大學舞蹈研究所創作組,同時也是一名自由舞蹈工作者,專注於創作、表演和教學。創作核心多以身體作為載體,靈感源自於個人生命經驗。近期專注於舞蹈、身體與物件的關係,並積極嘗試有別於鏡框式舞台的觀演關係。作品《DROWN》獲2023年德國斯圖加特國際獨舞大賽「舞蹈首獎」,並受邀至瑞士日內瓦大劇院芭蕾舞團交流。

A graduate student at the Taipei National University of the Arts and an independent dancer, Liao’s recent work explores the relationship between dance, the body and objects. Her work DROWN won the Grand Prize at the 2023 Stuttgart International Solo Dance Competition.

█ 影像設計 Visual Design

李國漢 LEE KUO HAN

劇場多媒體影像設計,「好好做設計聯盟」成員。藉由光影與時間的細微變化,呈現人的細膩情感。持續探索影像與各式空間交融的語彙。作品《Break&Break!無用之地》周書毅身體錄像展,榮獲「第17屆台新藝術獎」,並於2022年獲得世界劇場設計展(World Stage Design)影像設計獎,2023年受邀參展布拉格劇場四年展(Prague Quadrennial)。

A multimedia theater designer who captures subtle emotions through the interplay of light and time. A member of the “Good Design Alliance”, Lee’s work has won multiple awards, including the 17th Taishin Arts Award.
